knee Op: waiting years for knee replacement saw surgeon... - NRAS
knee Op
Have you chased it up or spoken to your GP? Often you have to be pushy unfortunately. It's sometimes worth ringing the surgeons secretary let them know you'll be able to take a cancellation at short notice.
phone the surgeon’s secretary and ask if they know where about on the list you are and let them know you’re willing to take a cancellation. Some hospitals have different systems in place and it’s not the surgeon’s secretary that manages the list but the elective care secretaries. Don’t let them fob you off with ‘Its nothing to do with me, I don’t manage the list’, ask who does manage the list and ask for their phone number.
Give the surgeons Secretary a call, and see what she says. You can also ask to be put on the list, to go in at short notice if they have cancellations. How long ago did you see the surgeon, did they mention anything about a joint school. Lots of hospitals hold 1/2 day sessions explaining the surgery, what to expect both befire and afterwards, as well as seeing physio and occupational therapists, who will look at equipment that would help afterwards. One of the main things to gain from it, is the exercises expected. If you start these prior to surgery, then you will go into surgery with stronger quads, and an easier time post-op.
Definitely phone though and ask to be updated.
I,ve been waiting four and a half years on the nhs for a total knee replacement so because of this 6 weeks ago i had surgury privately and it,s the best thing i,ve ever had done.Good luck.
Could I ask what the recovery time is for this operation, how long on crutches it using a walking aid etc
Is it painful operation afterwards thank you
Same with my brother! Told him to chase it up🥵
In Most areas you have to go for a special meeting to explain the operation before you are able to have the op after the surgeon as said you need one. , it is NHS policy. Plus due to strikes the delays for waiting lists are much longer now but do be a little pushy the waiting list people can tell you times at the moment, these ops do not happen overnight . Hopefully your op appointment won't take too long and it does help if you are able to take a cancellation at short notice.
I was finally placed on the waiting list for my first one in the summer after being too young for it and then I weighed too much. Cancer last year meant I lost a lot of weight. Three weeks ago today I had a phone call giving me 2 days notice to have it done. It’s been great so far. And only 11 weeks on the list but the surgeon did say he put me down as urgent and I got a cancellation. Someone else who was having his done the same day waited a year and at the end he kept phoning the secretary and that worked for him.
