Hoping everyone is as good as can be, and managing well as things begin to open up a little more.
Following recent ankle replacement, my ankle and foot are still hugely swollen and, which is feeling worse, I seem to have developed 2/3 calluses in the bottom of the same foot, making walking unbearable!
Does anyone have any idea of what sort of shoes may be helpful? I hate this ad I feel that I haven’t worn a “pretty” pair of shoes for years and now my feet seem to be getting worse, reducing options even further!

First off you need to get a chiropodist to look at your feet and make sure you recover from the surgery you have had. I feel for you over shoes. I wish i could wear heals, but find i can't. .xxxx
Sketchers are the worst for arthritic feet because the soles are so bendy. You feel everything. Best thing I've found is trainers where the sole doesn't bend giving you lots of shock absorbing. Or walking shoes. Have you got orthotics in your shoes? If not ask your rheumy to refer you to a rheumy podiatrist who will make some for you. You probably have biomechanical errors so you're walking on a different part of your foot now and your skin is thickening to protect hence the calluses. You will need to get them removed by a professional.
I’ve had orthotics and because of the complex issues with feet, they have not been a long term solution, unfortunately . I will look to visit a chiropodist re calluses .
No the orthotics don't cure everything but they have been proved to slow the progression of feet deformity. I wear mine all the time. I can't manage without them. It's so hard to get shoes.
Sorry to here about your problems have you tried Joya shoes they are expensive but they are cushioned and they come in extra wide hope this is helpful.
I wear desert boots, wellies and sketchers so am not so sure I can be of much help.. but I worked with someone years ago who was born with a club foot and what she did in the end was have a pair of shoes made to fit for dress and special occasions and she always said that it was worth every penny just for the self confidence boost she did
I have calluses on the bottom of both my feet and had orthotics made to take the pressure off of them. They work to a certain extent but I have to shave them down every now and then still but less than without the orthotics. It might be difficult to get orthotics at the moment but a podiatrist should be able to help short term to make walking more comfortable. I’m sorry I can’t help with shoes as it’s a nightmare trying to find ones to fit for me too 😔
Hi Eiram. Have you tried Hotter shoes and boots. I don't know much at all about your sort of problem but Hotter are such a comfortable make for many people. I'm sorry to hear that you're still having problems after all this time. It must be dreadful for you. All the best. x
Have you tried Ecco? They aren’t cheap but I find they are well made and comfortable, once you find a style that fits. Buying in the sale makes them more affordable.
Hi Eiram, Sounds like you need something really tailored to your feet at the moment and they do take a while to make (don’t get me started on my crazy “experience”!!) It may be worth asking if you can get some advice from an orthotist over the phone. Given the fact you’ve had surgery and need to be able to move I hope they are able to help, even if recommendations and advice if they can’t see you. I am sure they would want your foot and ankle to stabilise before they could make any orthotic or shoes etc., anyhow as I had this issue in 2014 when my RA was flaring and my foot was swelling up then going down after steroid injections.
My friend who had foot surgery a few years back bought some men’s trainers which were very wide but she is Amazonian and has size 7 feet and men’s start at size 7 I believe, so unless you have got larger feet that wouldn’t help. I am sorry I’m not to much help given your requirements for the post op foot but I really would ask if you can have the advice of the hospital orthotist. I have found Hotter to be very lovely styles but too low under the heel for me as my Achilles pull and my behind the knee area hurts it I go too low. Too high and I’d be flat on my face! I go for wedges or block heel of about 2ins or a trainer with a lot of support. I have flat feet and all sorts of balance issues due to that. 🤨
Anyhow I hope you can find something to get your foot in but if you’ve got a slimmer foot and a larger foot then that is an issue. I have two different widths which can cause problems. (Unless I buy two pairs and make one good pair for me from those!?!)
There is a company who do extra wide shoes called Cosyfeet but they aren’t fashion as such but have up to EEEE widths for those who need. Also Widershoes are more fashionable but not sure how wider they go. I looked at them years ago when my foot was puffy most of the time. I have my orthotic shoes and boots but can wear a couple of other brands (not specialist) who do an E fitting. I think you will need more than that with an ankle that has recently had surgery. Good luck and hope the op will be very successful for you.
Oh, Marie. Blinkin ankles. Do you know, I think you should see a Podiatrist, get those calluses sorted because nothing will be comfy with those on your soles. I know just how it is, saw mine last week, bliss. If you see one she/he will advise on what's needed now, having had your ops, because obviously your needs are different to before they were done.
I hope you can get sorted, then you can go shoe shopping yay!!
We're generally ok. H is shattered, neck, stomach & legs really playing up as he's been tiling the shower room & then went on to tile the vestibule. I asked him to take a proper rest before starting it but would he listen? His Gastroenterologist wants him to have the cholecystectomy but he's reticent. To be honest I think he needs to get his head sorted, I think it's all connect to his heart ops, he's frightened of anything going wrong again. Ah well, we'll amble along.
Hi Marie, I have so much trouble finding shoes that fit my now deformed feet. I have to wear men’s trainers or sketchers. So can empathise with you. My feet are also very sensitive. I’ve given up with women’s shoes. I’ve had shoes and trainers made for me and they haven’t helped. It’s not been the time recently to try any on, I can’t get any on line as they always have to go back. Normally I see the podiatrist every 6 weeks or so. I think you need to see one to sort out firstly the callouses and then ask the hospital for new orthotics after your op. I was also advised to wear ankle boots for support I have a pair of Hotter’s that are coming up 9 years now, can’t find a replacement. Good luck. X
I definitely agree with you. I have alway liked clothes and enjoy looking as good as possible, it all goes wrong when you get to my feet! fortunately family and friends see me for who I am. But it would be so good not to have to struggle as you say, finding footwear that looks reasonable and also comfortable. X
I have so many shoes I keep in case a miracle happens, since shielding I’ve decided they must go, trouble is I sort through them and still dream....I’ve had triple foot fusions on both feet, the ankle on my right foot collapsed a few years back, as I can cope with the pain, I’ve not gone ahead with surgery to fuse that ankle, I know from experience It doesn't mean my feet will be back to normal after. I do hope you get your wish x
Bucks and converse shoes are some of the most under suggested shoes around here. Desert boots not floating your boat? Get some bucks. Wear with everything (almost).
Sorry to hear that Marie, You have had your time of it. For outdoors I can only wear nike trainers and even indoors I was having problems with slippers, I was finding all kinds of slippers hurt my ankle more so I bought some Caprice Mules, I have a very high instep (arch) and find them much more comfy than slippers. One of the physio's told me not to wear a mule but I find them much more comfy, I have wasted so much money on shoes and slippers. I am still awaiting my operation and to be honest I am bit unsure. What is your consultant saying about the swelling? Take care and hope you get some relief soon xx
