I went into the PIP claim assuming the worst and i have to say I feel very lucky compared to many on here as it went very smoothly. Assessment at home by phone and awarded PIP and paid this week.
So don't be put off by claiming for PIP with RA as it can be done though I accept I was very lucky and much of it down to the assessor!
I bought a recliner chair that swivels, with a footstool (second hand); baskets to use in saucepans though it means the lids don’t fit tightly and there’s less space; compression gloves; supports for knees, ankles, wrists (not as stiff as spica/brace); breadmaker with programmes for specialty flours; knives with right angled handles; electric can opener; jar gripping gadget with circles of various sizes; lightweight cup with large handle for easy grip; saved hard too and bought a second hand car last July.
It has made life easier when severe pain and swelling disable me.
My son helps too, pours my tea when my wrists and hands are no good, carries to my comfy chair with my handy table by it. Bought that table too, with PIP.
And I bought a hiking pole, easier to grip than a stick when out on a gentle hike; and a front sling bag that holds a drink, cards, phone, gloves etc ...
Have you thought of a hot water heater / dispenser too. They can be very expensive but there are some very reasonable ones on amazon too. I got one for the days when my hands are really bad the water heats very quickly like a espresso without all the spitting.. not boiling either so if you spill your tea it won’t do you as much damage as boiled water from a kettle would. I fill it with a small plastic jug been a godsend and I find I use it more than the kettle now. PIP paid for mine too.
Oh shame I have found lots of gadgets that have remained in the drawer because I just could use them or get on with them. Not the heater though it’s very handy. Totally understand about space though I’ve had to put my coffee machine in the cupboard to have enough space. Might just exchange the kettle for coffee machine though coz I do like a fresh brewed cup of coffee.
Pip pip hooray. Delighted for you. This is as it should be stress free. No one wants this disease but it does effect your way of life. Like me you had to reduce your working hours so financially things become a worry . It just gives you that bit of relief from money worries . We are entitled to this help.
Do you mind me asking when you put your pip claim in? They received my form back in February and I still haven’t heard anything, I’ve called the helpline and they were no help at all. Obviously with the pandemic going on it is going to take longer but I just find it strange how I haven’t heard anything in 3 months. Really happy for you that you had a good experience. How was the other the phone assessment? 🙂
Thanks, maybe I should call again. I had one text in February saying that they had received my form that’s it.Do they backdate Payment from when you first apply. ?
I too didn’t hear anything ( this is last year) they said they did not receive my form. I did another one and sent it special delivery signature required. It went to mandatory . Heard nothing so chased they said they received it too late . Luckily I sent it special delivery with signature required and I had proof with date, time and signature. All my correspondence with them i now send special delivery . It costs but there is no dispute. You need to be one step ahead. I also photocopy every thing so I don’t need to rewrite. All payment is backdated to the first phone call when you request application form
Thank you, I don’t know why it’s such a nightmare trying to do things like this. They definitely don’t make it easy for anybody. My phone call was January this year
I sure you can email them . I have in the past.i think there is an email address in the booklet. I didn’t get my award until then end of November . It really was hard work
Hope your payment was backdated too from when you first made your claim. Well done though very pleased for you. Mine was a nightmare but still had a good outcome in the end I was already getting DLA disability living allowance which was the original PIP have to say that the process should have been much easier to swap from one to the other but oh no that wasn’t the case for me. Hopefully the system is a little better at the moment as they’ve probably realised in the current climate that people who don’t have long term health issues or disabilities are finding it hard.
That’s great news. I had my assessment on the phone yesterday. I was a mess for a few days before fearing the worst. The guy was lovely and no where as bad as I thought. Everyone I’ve told has said that they are told to be nice so that they can trick you. Obviously I hope this isn’t true but I’m happy that I just told the truth and he put me at ease so what will be will be.
Cornwa11 glad it went well for you as it shows there are good people out there too doing the assessments as well!
