Slightly random question but has anyone found that the condition of their teeth has deteriorated with psoriatic arthritis. Waiting to start medication but the dentist has noticed a difference in my teeth.

Over the past few years, my teeth have become quite sensitive and the dentist thinks that the enamel on the biting edge of my lower from teeth in particular may be wearing away, but we’ve never talked about it being related to PsA. What sort of deterioration are you experiencing?

Like Mmrr, I also have seropositive RA. For a number of years I've had gradual erosion of the enamel on the back my middle two upper front teeth. About a year ago one eventually became so thin that it broke off, and the other one's not far behind. When I asked my dentist why the enamel was wearing off she accused me of grinding my teeth, if not when awake, then I must be doing it in my sleep. I had a bit of a job trying to through to her that this was not the case, in fact I don't think I did manage to entirely convince her. I had the broken tooth repaired with a composite filling and quite a decent job she made of it too. It's just a matter of time before I'll need similar repairs made to the other tooth. Seems a bit odd how it's just these two teeth that seem to be affected. My dentist could not offer a plausible explanation about any of it. :-O Can't be certain of course, but I have a hunch that this erosion is most likely RA related rather than meds.

Obviously no expert but tend to agree it’s the disease. I’m seropositive too & spent a fortune at dentists in year building up to diagnosis (before meds) which I could ill afford & to little avail as the damn things keep crumbling: the gift that keeps on giving eh? 😁😬

If this particular type of tooth erosion is related to RA, then I wonder if it's more common with seropositive cases(?) like you, Mmmr and my good self are. ;-) Food for thought I suppose......

in reply towishbone

Does make you wonder wishbone 🙁 funny thing is I asked about slight erosions last time (thought drugs stopped/slowed this) & nurse said oh well, you’ve got the antibodies, might happen anyway. Are teeth same?? 🤔

Can't recall ever asking my rheumy about it. If my dentist had ever mentioned it then I might have, but despite having regular checkups over the years she did not. :-O So until my tooth broke off I just assumed it was just a part of the ageing process.

I don't have psoriatic arthritis , but seropositive RA , but have noticed a deterioration in my teeth. I believe it well recognised in RD.

A good oral hygiene regime is useful and a good dentist too !

Good old RD eh ?!

Yes. Not sure if it's the disease or meds related though. Since benepali I've been experiencing really awful bleeding of gums. I'm using salt washes and dental sticks to try fix the issue. Will have to go to dentist before my teeth fall out. Might get some mouth wash tomorrow in mean time.

NN , I get difflam on prescription which has helped a lot ( the prescription is for the mucositis I get from from MTX, but has helped my gums and teeth too).

in reply toMmrr

Thanks. I forgot I've got some difflam spray somewhere. Not quite the same as mouth wash, but it will do until I get to shops.

Nettienet: check my last entry:

Iwould check for dental infections, with cavita scan. My 15 years RA was cured since my dental surgery on 22 October. Offically received a phone call today confirming my CRP factor is 8 therefore they ask me to be off my meds. I have been off since 6 october for the operation. I also had 10 years gum disease, so I would be checking for dental infections, mercury poisoning and metal allergy. I also has metal amalgam replaced. All in al 6k pounds of work, but got 15 years of RA cure. Pricelless.

Good to hear you are better. I've heard this a few times now. I did have an appalling root canal a good few years back now. Dreadful sadistic butcher of a man. About a year after it was done I got a massive infection and had to have tooth removed .

Unfortunately there's no way I could afford scans. I doubt I would get it on national health.

My cavitan scan for half the mouth cost 200 pounds then they have to check each root canal whohc was 60 pounds each and I had 3. Lucky I was given some money when I moved jobs as a retain bonus and I was able to afford the operation which was 5k pounds but I still have to check the other half of the mouth because I have my throut swalloen on the right side. Mind you I had both sides swallen for 15 years. The left side is not swallen any more after the root canals operated on. Also the scan did not include the wisdome teeth at the back so i will need to check them as well. I am happy I am getting better, but as soon as the jaw is healed in April I will go check he rest of the mouth and confirm that ifection on the root canals have healed completely. It is going to be a full mouth scan.

Getting root treatment, or any other dental treatment will NOT ‘cure’ rheumatoid arthritis.

Secondly unless you swallowed a hell of a lot of amalgam fillings you don’t get it from general dental work. Unless of course you are allergic to metals.

I had an allergic reaction to a temporary filling awful state I was in a couple of years ago . In the end I just asked them to take the bloody tooth out . 💐

I had metal on my moth since the age of 10 years old. I had 10 or 11 metal teeth in total including the root canals that had metal on them I am 52, so I was 20 years with metal and no problems. The thing is the body over time and at old age have difficulties in repairing and after 3 root canals it took its toll. Looking back each root canal had a signficant health event happening to me. i just did not connect the dots. We are fragile.

How can you explain I had 2 cavitations and 8 metal removed and yes I have metal alergy, but I also high mercury reading and I had CRP 22 in January before an operation, I was on tramadol every 6 hours and paracetamol every 4 hours and i was still in pain because i had to came off my meeds. After dental surgery my CRP gone to 11 and yerterday to 8. I did not do anything else, no suplements and no special diet. What was then. Surely I did pray a lot to be cure, but also to put me in the right path of cure. So, my Ra help line told me to stop taking Metrotrexade and tocizulab. I was in Metrotrexade for 15 year, Cimzia for 5 years, tocizulab for 1 year. I have another operation in 2014 and when I came off those medications I was on tramadol every 6 hours and paracetamol every 4 hours. I am now only on anti-flamatories as I was for 15 years and paracetamol once a day at night. If that is not cure, what is cure? Are you a medical personal? Because all my life I heard them saying I would never be cured and then after they saw the blood tests and they said : yes, you might be cured and the CRP is normal they said. I mean I know the graph says 0 to 4 is normal but after my medical profile, starting CRP 300 in 2003 after root canal done I would assume, yes. But I never put 1+1 together because I was too busy trying no to lose my job. I even left a message on my previous RA consultant to give him the news and I never got a call back. I am going on Holidays now. I will never stop tellig people what did happen to me even though medical people don't want to believe. Even if that helps one person only, that will be an amazing thing to do for someone else. I wish you Merry christmas and i hope you all have God hellping you and getting you in the rigt direction. I am actually surprise that people will not reaseach this. I did my reseach and it worked for me. It might not work for you. But do your reasearch and pray. Have faith. I kept saying I would be cured for 15 years. Nobody believed me. But I never lost my faith. I had a bet with my partner where he would eat his hat if I were cured after the dental op. He said yes, but he wanted the blood tests to see. I gave him the blood tests and I told him what the RA team told me and he agreed to eat a hat. off course i don't want him to eat a hat, I will do a cake in the shape of a hat and getting him to eat it all. Even a week ago i was down with pain and I asked my self the question: do you have faith? After coming all this way, would I hang on to my faith a litle while until the jaw bone heals which takes 6 month and let the body repair itself? And my answer was: yes. I will not allow myself to loose faith. God bless and make the 2019 be better than the 2018. I wish you all mery christmas and happy new year. .

Look. Don’t get me wrong. If it’s worked for you, great. And long May your good health continue. All I was pointing out was that the cavitan scan and treatment is a holistic one. It has no scientific or medical research backing it. In fact, quite the reverse (see my link above to quack watch). Numerous dental practitioners have been hauled before their professional bodies for carrying it out.

As for removal of amalgam fillings. Again, yes some people (with allergies) have found the benefits of having them replaced with glass ionomer ones. But, again, for 99.9% of people with them they do no harm.

So. Once again. Good luck. Have a great and peaceful Christmas.
