I can only recommend what I know and that’s a Vi-Spring (Devonshire mattress). Costs an arm and a leg (which may be the only things that work 😄) but if you want to experience lying on a cloud with the most fabulous support then I can’t praise it highly enough.
Everyone is different though as we all know and budget plays a large part. I’ve had my bed for 8 years and it shows no sign of sagging or falling apart - unlike its owner - so well worth having a look at. Good luck, go to good bed shops, try out mattresses and hope you find something.
Having been away on business and finding that when I slept in hotels with a Hypnos mattress, I slept better than at home, I took the plunge and bought one. It's the Hypnos Orthos origins 7. Quite expensive, but for me, definitely an improvement. It's probably very personal though. A lot of suppliers do a trial period though so long as you follow their rules....otherwise you could go stay at a Premier Inn for a night as they use Hypnos.
Hypnos mattresses in hotels are made especially for hotels. The ones the public can buy are different so I was told by a bed salesman.
Hope you find one that suits .
While the mattress that I bought is different from the one in the hotel, I think that the quality is good and the outcome of a good night's sleep is the same. I have the old mattress (which isn't that old and a 'good quality' one with similar specification - pocket sprung, firm) on a spare bed and when I had to sleep on that again recently, I was in pain again.
Thanks for posting this. I'm in exactly the same situation. Just can't get comfortable and get a good night's sleep.
this has often been asked here, if you type mattress into the search box and filter for NRAS all past posts will come up. Sadly we are all different in what we need regarding mattresses so what works for one person here might not work for you. An expensive item so if you can get a trial of the one you like I’d do that.
I think this must be one of the most asked questions on here.
On the strength of the fact that an old Tempur mattress we had years ago but got rid of when the rise and fall electric bed broke down when it was out of guarantee and which was probably the mattress that I was the least uncomfortable on even if it wasn’t a bed I would want to lie in on I recently bought an expensive soft Tempur cool touch cloud mattress.
It is mostly good but I still sometimes waken up really achey at which point I move into the spare room where I sleep on a regular medium priced John Lewis mattress with springs that is quite comfortable.
I also have found the Premier Inn beds to be very comfortable, in the past I’ve had a horsehair type of natural mattress - too firm so the worst ever, I’ve have had those ‘bed in a box’ mattresses, we have had so many different mattresses it is embarrassing and I dread saying I’m not comfortable.
When we go to stay anywhere Ive been known to strip the bedding off to find out what sort of mattress I’ve been sleeping on. I was talking recently with someone who had bought a Flaxby mattress from Dreams she said everything in it is natural and it was like sleeping in a cloud but then when I move into our spare bed and am comfortable a friend who has a bad back didn’t find it all that comfortable while his wife did. They are like me and have had endless beds.
I think part of the problem is no matter what sort of mattress you get even if they are comfortable for a while - you’ve still got the same old body.
hi
I have one of the i-gel mattresses from Bensons. It’s so comfy. I never get a decent night sleep when I’m away from home on holiday.
Thanks for all the replies. We are staying at a premier inn in a few weeks so will see how I go there I was looking at Emma mattresses earlier but it's hit and miss eh as people say everyone's different
I just bought a foam mattress topper.
I've recently brought a firm bamboo mattress...its doing the job so far
IKEA firm suits me. I'd recommend.
I bought a DFS Optimum 4000 about 4 years ago and it's the best mattress I have ever slept on. My sleep quality has improved so much with it.
I have a latex topper as suffered like you. Much more comfy for me
It's impossible to recommend a mattress, but I recommend that you look into a 5cm or thicker mattress topper. That has helped me to get better sleep and less pain. A firm mattress with a soft topper. I hope you'll find something that will help.
I bought an expensive mattress from John Lewis a couple of years ago & it’s too hard for me unfortunately & don’t sleep well at all. In our other place I have a Sleepezze one which is great for me & I sleep much better & longer. But what suits one dosnt suit another. It’s hard though as lying on one for a few minutes isn’t ideal when you’re spending so much.
Hi I always use mattress toppers, a lot cheaper and so comfy 👍
I have had a Tempur mattress for a number of years now and I find that works well for me. By the way, if you go for the basic Tempur mattress you can claim VAT exemption if you have RA. All the best with finding something that helps you sleep more comfortably.
I had a memory foam mattress and woke up feeling like I had been beaten by a big stick from head to toe. Got this rem-fit.co.uk/products/rem-...
Hated it for the first week as it was much softer than I was use to, but now it is great. They offer a trial.
I got a Hypnos mattress which was expensive but what has helped beyond doubt was an elemuse topper from Amazon - it’s foam and is like being on air. It’s really really helped.
Hi Brian, if you have back pain with your RA don't assume you need a hard/firm mattress or an orthopaedic one. If you mainly sleep on your side you need a less firm one so your spine is fully supported in a straight line with your hip sinking into the mattress.
When I bought my Vi-Spring I tried lots of different mattresses in the shop and got the assistant to look at whether my spine looked straight on each of them. I ended up with a soft tension pocket sprung mattress and have never regretted it. Mine is nearly 20 years old and still very supportive - the only damage is where the cat has clawed the fabric on the corner of the divan base!
So I agree with Amnesiac - buying a Vi-Spring is a good investment and you are unlikely to need to replace it for a long time! Beware that many with RA find memory foam mattresses make us feel too hot, because of the disease and the meds we have to take for it.
As for hotel mattresses I find them far too hard for me. I usually have to ask for a mattress topper or an extra duvet to fold and put under me to be able to get comfortable!
Hope you find something that suits you as a good night's sleep is so important.
