Burning tongue !

I have just taken my increased dose of mtx 15mg. About 3 hours later my tongue felt like I had just drank a really hot drink and burnt it. Has anyone else had this problem ?

It maybe totally unrelated. Thank you in advance

I don't know if Methotrexate can cause that but I take tablets for Migraine and they do that to me, it usually wears off after about half an hour though, so hopefully it won't last long for you either. I start Methotrexate next week alongside Sulfasalazine, don't know what dose yet.

Take care.

Thank you. I also take sulphasalazine and hydroxy chlorine. Plus at the moment preds due to a flate up.

Good luck

My mouth felt like I'd burnt it when I was taking sulfasalazine. I was advised to stop taking it to see if it cleared up which it did quite quickly. I didn't go back on it after that.

in reply to

Thank you that is helpful as I take sulphasalazine too. Have been on this for nearly 5years though without problems. The Dr thinks it is not as effective to me now so started on the mtx at the end of Jan. My Nurse is talking about injection s to see if it will be absorbed better and start working.

Its all a bit new to me this so thank you.

Yes I did..but I was on mtx for 3 weeks and develop this symptoms. You need to tell your rheumatologist. Mine told me to stop taking it..that I was experiencing side affects from it. Sorry please let them know..I hate these drugs..

H

he also up my folic acid to 4mg for now to counter the mtx in my symptoms. I'm not on any drugs for rheumatoid because my white blood cells are extremely high. So I'm just on nsids n muscle n tramidol pain pill. I must say all these work . But they ate having me see a hemotologist to make sure nothing else is going on..

Hi westies, Burning tongue... yes. I have had this complaint for over a year now; not all the time but often enough to look into it. I agree with the methotrexate link but I also take prednisolone which doesn't help. My condition deteriorated to include oral thrush which is rather nasty. I had to come off methotrexate for two or three weeks when suffering from a chest complaint in February, but didn't notice any reduction in my tongue issues. However three weeks ago I had some nasty blood clots appear in my mouth every morning when I woke up and decided to stop using my steroid nasal spray, (after talking to my GP.) All the tongue issues cleared up. I have since gone back on it and the complaint has come back in a reduced state.

So I don't think it is down to any one medication, (in my case), but rather the immune system being compromised. I was prescribed some medication for the complaints and although they all worked to some degree, the issue returned again and again. I was also advised to try plain yogurt, but yogurt and me don't agree with each other some I had to stop that, but then my Rheumy nurse told me to try Goats yogurt. This has helped enormously... no nasty yogurt reactions. I don't think it will ever go away but at least now I have some control over it. Hope this helps.

I have 25ml MTX injections, and my mouth feels like this almost all the time. Tongue, lips and inside cheeks. I use Difflam to try to ease it.

I think this is something worth mentioning to your Rheumy nurse though burning tongue isn't specifically listed mouth inflammation is as a very common side effect. You don't say how often you've been prescribed folic acid but if it's only a couple of days then it's possible an increase could be helpful, again mention it to your Rheumy nurse. A lack of Vitamin B can cause a burning sensation in the mouth, particularly the tongue & as MTX can deplete folate levels it's possible you're not replacing enough. It might be worth increasing your intake of folate rich foods too, anything you can do to help yourself is good in my book!

I take folic for 6 days, will look into eating more folate things like spinach. Thank you.

Please go and see your GP, Google can give you additional information.

Thank you all. I will mention it to the Nurse. Today it has been better. Two days after the tabs and my folic acid day.

It feels like I have had a course of antibiotics if you understand not quite like having oral thrush but along those lines.

You have all been very helpful thank you

I had the burned feeling also, and sometimes described it as a tinny taste. I was taking mtx and hydroxy, then quit mtx and started on leflunomide. The feeling continued until I quit all of those and started on Humira alone. Now my mouth is back to normal. Yay!! It was not painful, but is a most annoying side effect. I wish I could tell you for sure which one causes it.

in reply toshareasmile

Thank you. Yes I have that tinny taste too but it is only on the day of the mtx and day after. I am going to ask the Nurse also I have a G.p appointment this week so will ask them.

People on here are very helpful and knowledgable thank you.
