Swollen Tongue

I have been on mtx and plaquenil for several weeks. Frequently my tongue feels swollen and feels like I burned it. Also have a metal taste. Has anyone else had this reaction? And does it get better?

I think you should speak with your doc rather than wait to see if it goes away. These drugs affect individuals so differently.

Sounds a little like Burning Mouth Syndrome to me. Mine was caused by stress, but I believe that it can be drug induced. But definitely see your doctor. Clemmie

I am waiting to see the oral consultant as they think I may have burning mouth syndrome caused by drug reaction. I get very very dry mouth which has swollen tongue and I get small lesions and raw spots on it.

Do pop to your dentist for advice and they can signpost you from there. Hope u feel better soon x

I got similar symptoms when I increased the dose of mtx from 20 to 25 mg. sore tongue with swollen white areas. Very painful to eat. Went away after about 6 weeks when decreased dose to 15 mg and came back when tried to increase to 25 again. Now on humeria and 15 mg mtx and RA much better controlled.

I have been on Methotrexate and Plaquinel and had a slightly sore tongue and gums feeling painful. However, it's really been my lips that have been very painful and blistered, so that is a different situation.. I have been taken off Methotrexate as a precaution. 3 months down the line the burning persists although the peeling skin is much better after I was given a steroid cream for a short time. I am still on Plaquinel- or the generic. I have read on various internet sites that a few people on Plaquinel have mouth issues. My Rheumatologist and GP do not seem to think it is an issue- I am only on 200mg daily but I sometimes wonder. You really have my sympathy as a burning mouth is very unpleasant. I hope you get some help with this soon. Best wishes.

Hi yes I get this but I now usually associate this happens before a flare as it's not constant

Hi! I have had that metallic taste for a short time. My tongue never got swollen but mt tongue burns on and off. I use children's toothpaste when brushing my teeth. Anything else burns to much.
