Help me quit!

I really want to quit smoking, I only have 2-4 a day but I know even that can be detrimental to my health.

I just do it out of habit or if I’m out for drinks with friends but I’ve been smoking more by myself recently.

My family and 90% of my friends are non smokers but in previous friendships and throughout uni I smoked a lot more.

I’ve gone through periods where I haven’t smoked for ages and don’t even think about it but I’d love to be a non-smoker!

Any tips on helping me stop? I’ve thrown away all tobacco products so it’s just resisting buying anymore and sticking to it!

Thanks!

It sounds like you have made a good start by throwing away all of the tobacco products! It also sounds like you usually only smoke in certain situations so that probably helps. Try to identify situations when you smoke (such as out for drinks with friends) and prepare for the cravings to hit hardest then. Smoking while out drinking is a difficult situation to deal with as our mindset changes when we drink. The thought of, "just one won't do any harm; I'll start again tomorrow" comes into play and that sounds quite logical after you've had a few pints. :-) I know this because I've done it plenty of times in previous quits.

Also, it's a learning process. You might be planning to go cold turkey at the minute but if that doesn't work don't beat yourself up about it and think you have failed. There are lots of alternative methods to try and different methods suit different people. I used a vape because it helped me in situations like the pub when (felt like I) needed a hit of nicotine and something to inhale it from! I've now been smoke and vape free for 4 years. I can happily sit in a pub and not miss smoking in the slightest but it took a while to get like that.

Vaping is not for everyone but it's something to consider, as well as cold turkey, patches, Champix....and all the other methods out there. Do a bit of research, read some of the posts on here and decide what you think is going to be the best way to tackle it for you personally. If that doesn't work then try something else! For a lot of us it's a learning process and we don't fall into the best way of doing it immediately.

I know it’s hard but the best thing you did getting rid of all tabacco products just keep at it distract your self when you get a craving and it will pass, and it’s not as easy a that, it’s. start good luck
