Nasal Polyps and GERD

Hi....I hate to bring bad symptoms up again :(....but after a visit to my GP he has found Nasal Polyps ( got steroid spray ) and put me on medication for GERD/acid reflux disease......I just wondered if anyone else had either of these , whether temporary or not ......My GP believes I had both problems before I stopped smoking and unsure why they are more noticable now than before .....Maybe thats the damage smoking did..........Plus point though is that its all treatable

I did have nasal polyps when I was younger, and the spray (flixonase) did the job, don't think it was smoking related cos I only social smoked back then, but it was very annoying!!

I went to Dr in Nov cos I was suffering a bit much indigestion especially at night

I was worried that something more serious was wrong,and caused by smoking,so I had an endoscopy which found oesphagus was ok but found a hiatus hernia.:confused:

As a result I am on Omeprazole,I started on 20mg but 10mg tabs seem ok but I guess I am on them indefinitely.

The basic message of your post I empathise with;being this-has smoking done any serious harm to my throat,windpipe or stomach.

Yes .....thats what he has put me on Omeprazole 20mg a day ........I dont really get heartburn though.....its affects my larynx ( voice box ) and throat and upper oesphagus.....he said its also called silent reflux or LPR ( not sure what it stands for , gonna google it lol )...so I dont think officially GERD , thats lower nearer to the stomach I think .... when I think back now I have had throat problems over the last 10 years or so that knocked my appetite off or i just didnt eat for a few weeks and went on protien shakes and then went back to normal after so long ,so maybe I have had it a while just now I notice it more or its got a bit worse .....probably wont know for sure .

Nasal Polyps....... I have never heard of before but I lost my sense of smell years ago and blamed the ciggies .....so again maybe I have had these a while and just now noticed a problem cos they are causing the post nasal drip !! Could all be just coincidence and me becoming more health conscious generally is making me get things checked out sooner rather than later

They're still working out what's going on with mine - originally said GORD and put me on Omeprazole, then decided it should be IBS so took me off the Omeprazole and put me on Mebeverine twice a day, now back on the Omeprazole and off the Mebeverine while they do some more tests!

Should they ever come a final decision I'll give you an update!

Oh my god !!.....Thankyou ......Im still on cetrizine antihistamine for the drip aswell lol......any more medication and I will rattle !!....I see the doc in 4 week now so fingers crossed its all under more control by then

OH's polyps (diagnosed following him repeatedly developing strep throat) responded well to the spray and as long as he uses it daily they no longer cause any problems. His brother has had surgery several times to remove the polyps but they regrow unfortunately. Anyway, hopefully you'll be fine on the spray.

A close friend has GERD and had very similar symptoms to you (including the recurrent sore throats) She was prescribed Omeprazole and since she started taking that it very rarely flares up.

Thankyou ....any advice is appreciated although I have been googling it all and I guess I will be staying away from anything that triggers these things
