1 more sleep till... the unthinkable

Hi all - I was doing some googling looking for motivation and found this forum! So hello all! I feel this is like AA and I need to stand up and announce "I am a smoker'. I am sat at the PC with 2 cigs left in the pack which i have to smoke before bedtime - which I now think is dumb and i should just throw them away - not sure why I havnt - maybe I am off to a terrible start already... but its not tomorrow yet....

Anyway I'm armed with my nicogum and a bottle of 'colour bubbles' which is my weapon of mass distraction and ready for my first real attempt at quitting!

As God is my witness, I will give up the fags!

Good luck to all out there!

Still a muppet!

:D

First of all

Welcome to this wonderful place and yes its like the AA but for ex smokers but the structure is the same we support each other through our own personal journeys with all sharing the same goal and that is to win our freedom back and join a very elite group under the name of NOPE short for Not One Puff Ever

just remember to distract your mind when you get a crave and reading some of the inspiring posts on here will certainly help you with that also sipping water taking up anew hobby or an old one

the craving will get weaker the further along the road you go

onwards and upwards is the only way to go

i look forward to reading your progress

:)

regards

Carol

like AA, yes that is a very good comparison. Except we are around much more than a weekly meeting,We are here daily, hourly if you need, there is usually someone on line.

You have made the first few important moves to quitting. Planning when and how and joining this forum. Post as often as you want and need, read through others posts-some are truly inspirational. Before you know it you'll have the first and worst few days behind you and you'll be heading for the first milestone of 1 week.

enjoy your quit, I still am ;)

as Carol says We look forward to reading of your journey

I am sitting here in Australia in deep jetlag so please forgive my rantings.

BUT....

What exactly are you trying to give up? This is like AA, however you aren't standing up and saying "I'm a smoker", but "I'm a nicotine addict". This is absolutely fundamental. Break your nicotine addiction and the smoking problem goes away by definition. BUT - break your smoking addiction by switching to NRT and you are curing the symptom and not the cause. This may seem a subtle distinction but, if you read the history of regular contributors to this forum over the last few months, I hope it will start to make some sense.

Congrats on your decision. This is the first step. However do not think of this as a sacrifice that you are making. It makes it much more difficult to quit that way.

I am on my 4th day of my quit so I'm not quite over the hill yet but what's kept me going is that I am going to rid my body of this poison !!

If you think you are being deprived of cigarettes then you will be miserable. You are not being deprived of anything. It is you depriving that nicotine addict within you of the poison it needs and once you deprive him despite all his tantrums you will succeed. That's the thought you need !

Wish you best of luck

Day 5 and feeling good!

Thanks to all for the great motivation! It is really nice to know you are not alone! I'm still hanging in there! And this is how its going:

Herbal tea is great! Its my new found friend. Theres a nice little process to make it - it smells wonderful, and tastes delish. It has lovely names like Wild Orange Blossom and Youthberry! And its Zero calories! Ok so I am relentlessly chewing the nicogum and last night was quite challenging when I accidentally invited friends over for supper. Of course the usual insanity set in - with 2 emergency grocery store runs for things i forgot - got the jitters quite bad when the spring roll wraps were some sort of bizarre see through plastic sheets??? ****** Americans! (Apparently the yanks like to deep fry them?) Who knew! So had to go with soft taco wraps - ok so it was a bit Asian fusion I declared. BUT I did not smoke. I do not smoke. I am not a smoker! I laugh at the girl who last year would trudge outside to stand in -20, in the snow, wheezing as quick as she could on a cig so her fingers would not freeze up! hahaha. Instead I'll be tucked up cosy in my house with my lovely herbal tea.

Happy thoughts to all out there!

Valerie
