Everyone said to me, when you stop smoking you will cough all sorts up. Well I never coughed when I smoked and I have never coughed since I quit, so what is happening to the tar on my lungs:confused:

Me too, and night sweats too! Last time I had to keep getting up in the night was just prior to diabetes diagnosis...and I am definitely eating more now so it could be high blood sugars I guess.

Funny side effects that I didn't realise existed!

Not everything in your lungs comes up in a cough, lots of quitters don't cough at all (I didn't). Some of the mucus will just get swallowed and digested.

From what I can understand the tar residue can take years to shift, although the chemicals contained in the tar become less potent over time. The good news is that the cilia which haven't been killed off by the tar can and do rebuild themselves, and prevent toxins, bacteria, dust etc getting deeper into the lungs.

So basically, regardless of whether you're coughing up anything visible, you are doing your lungs a serious favour by quitting. It makes a major difference almost instantaneously.

I found some tips here for giving your body a helping hand to regenerate your lungs. Can't vouch for them personally, but none of it can hurt!

Right-oh. Thanks Helen!

Garlic - check. Onions, check. Exercise...could do a bit better. More water, should be easy enough. Green/herbal tea....? Aw c'mon, I'm an over 40 bloke who's just quit smoking, don't think I've ever seen it before! I'll try it...I may be gone some time....! ;)

Nearly two months in, and today I start the coughing. I was expecting it sooner, but maybe Christmas and snow and other stuff got in the way? Don't know, maybe it's just taken my lungs longer to adjust...? It feels weird, a real hack.

I guess from a serious perspective your lungs can take time to adjust and start clearing themselves out. And maybe its only now that the cilia are starting to recover their position and serve their purpose again. That's how I like to think about this.

From a comedy perspective, following the thread.... does this count as green tea? If i wee more, is that where the tar goes? So much biology :o

Oh Dear Hawkeye, something else to look forward too :D

The thought of your green tea has just made me heave this morning :D

I guess not everyone will cough, so I am really hoping I don't. I hope it doesn't leave you with a sore throat.:)

I never really coughed when I was a smoker - bit of a throat clear in the mornings and if I smoked a lot but that was it, was expecting *the cough* to kick in quickly and didn't really get anything for a week or 2.
