I'm a newbie and this is my first post. I'm on day 18 (looking at the time I'm quite near the end of it) and seeking help, advice, etc.,
I'm on NRT patches and occasional piece of gum but I can not stop coughing. It wakes me out of my sleep at 3am and it's so bad that it makes me physically ill (talking down the white telephone is never fun - but at that time of day?!). It's driving me mad.
This has happened from day 12 and so I'm hoping there is not much more gunk to come. As you all seem such an intelligent bunch of guys and gals (must be - by giving up the dirty tabs) could you arm with your wisdom of what else is in store and how long it will take until the annoying coughing stops.

I seem to cough at the slightest thing, I think it is all the good things growing back in my nose and throat, but see your Dr is my advice, I am sure, he or she would be happy to see you, they love to talk to people that have given up smoking, cos they know what we have been through to get to where we are.
I coughed like a good'un cos I ate a pickled onion!
The little folicles are growing back to protect you, that may be what it is, and also you may be clearing the rubbish out of your lungs - but if you are worried, see your Dr

Sarah hi
Not sure about NRT or gum ...but coughing like that is normal , chest infection after chest infection people go through your lungs are clearing them selves out, but angie said what colour are you coughing up ? green to brown is what i was coughing up (eww i know) still am even now ...if you think about all the tar on those lungs created by years of smoking ....to me it sounds like your lungs are starting to function as they should anf the tiny hairs in the lungs are growing back and pushing the crap out ....but as in any situation you are worried about you should get advise of your doc he will soon give you the proper advise all i am offering is an opinion .......one thing is for sure the cough and phlegm will continue to come out as the months go by take heart by it your lungs are working nicely now....bad side is it is disturbing your sleep are you drinking lots anf lots of water ? that always helps......
Good luck Sarah it will all be worth it in the end
Now I'm worried that nothing is growing back at all, not a folicle, not an anything.
Is this normal?
Hi Polster
Everyone is different i suppose perhaps your cillia (think thats how you spell it) are ok and working just fine ..... some quitters dont get a cough some get terrible hacking coughs i wouldn't worry ... to be honest i would be dead pleased you havn't, one thing for sure is the nicotine is out of your body and you no longer smoke..... dont worry Polster i am sure this is ok ..... better than some of the poor folk on here most people can't go loo and some just get bad wind lol........ Me i survived on 2 and half hours kip for about 4 months not good..... jesus i couldn't sleep my craves off ..sat up with the little Bar stewards for 21.5 hours a day lol ................
Thanks Bradders, yes I guess me worrying about not having a hacking terrible cough is not such a bad thing is it! I've tried coughing but nothing, nadda, zip. If you were up for 21.5 hours a day and fighting off the craves, then the fact you're smoke free and you've made it is brilliant. Gives us all extra inspiration - thanks!
I've not had any clearing out coughing sessions either. I'm still undecided if that's a good things due to nothing needed to be clearing or it's so embedded, it's taking for ever to shift. If it is a case of 'taking it's time to loosen and shift' then providing I get some notice I'll be fine.

Sarah - Hope your cough sorts itself out soon!
Polster that just made me Grin widely lol...... used to do that when i was a kid to get a day off school hahahhah tried coughing Genius that Polster
The good news is now you have stopped smoking within the first couple of days afterwards these cilia ( the little hairs) will begin to start working again. In fact a lot of the time, even while we smoke, some cilia start to work while we’re sleeping, which is why many smokers will wake up in the morning to a coughing fit - the lungs are already trying to get on with the work of repairing themselves.
Once the cilia are able to work unhindered they will begin clearing the lungs of phlegm and sputum which will cause increased coughing for the first couple of weeks but this is a good thing as your lungs begin to get themselves back to normal. As the body continues to clear the lungs over the following weeks, lung function and capacity will improve and continues to improve for up to the next 13 weeks.
So there LOL keep coughing not nice but sooo good for you in the long run x
Now I know what is going on, I feel I can cope with the cough.
Some of you have asked the colour of the phlegm, it has been v.dark brown but also it has been clear. Lately I'm not sure as it's in with the rest of my stomach contents.
I am coughing throughout the day but it's a dry pathetic kind of cough but it is so much worse at night.
On another note, I dreamt that I had a cigarette last night, feels so real!
Don't worry definately didn't and definately won't.
The coughing is normal just the lungs clearing out the gunge it will pass soon
