I am being a bit of a hypochondriac. In quite a bit of literature it states that the lungs begin to clear and a former smoker starts coughing within the first few days. This is the third time in one year that I have attempted to quit (this time I will truly stop) but I have never coughed. The longest I have gone before is two weeks and never a cough. Has anyone had this experience? Any idea what or if anything is wrong?

Day Four and no coughing

While it is true that the vast majority of people get a nasty cough (and some even bring up the tarry contents of their lungs as I did, not pleasant!).... not everyone gets this.
Hi there
Welcome to the forum you will get all the help you need on here Well done for quitting as for the cough it varies I didn't get one for several weeks and didn't bring anything up it lasted about 10 days and went again don't worry about it
Keep going and goodluck
Thanks
..all for the helpful comments. The first time I quit and didn't cough I decided it was because my lungs are resiliant to the effects of tar and nicotine, not mere mortal lungs. This time around I decided it was because I was dying. Thanks for keeping me a few steps away from crazy. Although, I have to admit: I was looking forward to bringing up all the tar just because it would show me something tangible. I guess breathing deeply is tangible enough.
Hi,
I have stopped for 4 weeks now and haven't had a cough at all! I was a little disappointed, as daft as it sounds, cos I thought it would be a sign of my body clearing itself of some of the cr@p!
I do feel loads better though - I can breathe deeply in the morning and I can run further and faster than I have been able to for years!

Posted this before but....
My G.P. suggested to get someone to "lightly" hit all over your back with a closed fist as it helps to free up the crud in your lungs
Ive not had a cough as such,I did get a very bad cold shortly after quitting and I get rid of loads of gunk then.
I have noticed I don't wheeze at night and my breathing is deeper and clean
Day 5. No cough. No cigarettes.
Looks like I will take some expectorant cough syrup and find someone to beat me. Should be a fun night!
Thanks again.

I know what you mean! It makes you think, then, that all that sh!te is still sitting there at the bottom of your lungs... Better out than in aye?
Two weeks today, and no cough myself.
