When I first quit smoking a little over 8 months ago, I was surprised because in those first few weeks, I didn't gain any weight - although I expected I would. Especially quitting cold turkey. I figured I'd want something to chew on as a substitute for smoking.
So I never realized that I was slowly, but surely, eating more, and eating more fattening foods, until a month or so ago when I joined a gym. I'd gained 15 pounds.
I've not been able to keep my commitment to the gym as well as I've kept my commitment to stop smoking; I go 1-2 times a week which is probably not nearly enough.
Now I'm discovering that all my pants are too small. I hate this! I feel old and fat and ugly - although I'm a smokefree old, fat, ugly guy.
Any tips?
My obsession is sweet / sugary foods, not salty foods, btw.
I have the same problem. I didn't realise I had put on weight then when summer arrived & I tried to get into summer dresses the horrible truth dawned.
I am trying at the moment to lose 7kg ( that's about one stone I think - same as you ). Don't know if I'm in a position to give advice but I have increased my exercise regime a lot and I'm drinking lots and lots of water to try to stop me feeling hungry. I am also chewing loads ( and I mean loads) of chewing gum. Of course I'm eating "sensibly" - by that I mean I am trying not to over eat & I am filling up with vegetables. I don't think you can get fat eating loads of vegetables so long as they're not the starchy ones like potatoes.
I want to lose weight by Christmas and I don't want to buy heaps of clothes. I have started, as extra exercise, going to Bikram yoga. It's good for me since you have to keep up and it's strenuous. I intend to go about 3 times per week until Christmas. I also do yoga and exercise at home as well as running.
Maybe the extra weight we have is due to muscle!!!!
I gave up smoking Jan 19 2012 and it's only recently that weight has become an issue. The first 6 months I could keep my weight under reasonable control
I have put weight on too DGEE and Nonico.1 stone 1lb to be exact. I kind of knew and didnt want to get on the scales and have it confirmed, then, last Sunday I took the plunge, weighed myself and faced up to it. I needed to do something. This week I have resisted all the Krispy Kreme doughnuts in the office and the sweets and mince pies that make an appearance on the spare desk at the end of the office. I have drank mostly green tea and eaten fruit and lean meat if I have bread I do not have my beloved Lurpak on it just meat and salad I have also been swimming 4 times this week and it has paid off I have lost 2 lbs this week which is great if I can lose that every week I will be happy because by Christmas it will be almost a stone
Dgee if you can quit smoking you can cut out the sweet stuff and keep up the gym too, no way are you fat and ugly! Or old!
Hi Deegee, I shouldnt worry too much about the weight gain, when I quit I was a very slim 8 stone 4, this year in May I was a chunky 11 stone 4, couldnt get into any of my skinny jeans so decided to calorie count, I have lost 2 stone and feeling so much better, mind you I ate for england when I quit so not suprised.
Will be three years for me Christmas Day so you have plenty of time to get back to your normal weight, dont beat yourself up quitting is the healthy option and a bit of weight can be tolerated, just keep an eye on it and remember it takes about 3 years for the body to properly recover, well done on 8 months.
Theres hope for me then. I put on 3.5 stone its a nuisance but i think its part of the deal when we quit, and reading Js post it looks only temporary. i look forward to being back to my old self but smoke free of course. it took a year to put it on so it'll probably take just as long.
I lost weight at the start. Lost 8lb due to the fact I felt sick and could eat nowt. Now iv put that back on and another half stone. My once size 10 body is now a size 12. But iv put it all on me top legs tummy and ass. So iv still got a size 10 top. With no boobage in sight.. And a fat ass and stomach.. why couldn't it go where I needed the weight to go.
Noooooooooooooooooooooo, trust me you dont want it on the top, as we get older our boobs get broader so make us look frumpy, you will lose the lower half I promise but want lose the top, I hate the fact that all my life I have been nearly flat chested now Im not, any way you can lose it, please send advice LOL sorry dee

I Carnt believe it didn't think iv put that much on.. I was this lDy year thats why i got the wii fit. and i lost half a stone. The fatties iv ever bin was 11st 2 and that was another time I gave up smoking. It took me about 2 years get that off.. And smoking again..

If we're having a weigh in, I've put on well over a stone since quitting 9 weeks ago.:(. However, addressing said issues and now eating healthier, and loads more swimming and long walks with Meggie.

I agree I too hate the fact that I have been flat chested all my life and now I am not. I hope I lose them as I lose weight! Dont know why girls want big boobs.
Shelley you have what sounds like a pear shape which is perfect shape for a woman.
I'm still watching what I eat & exercising, hoping to lose weight by Christmas. It's coming off: slowly but surely.
However, I was in the supermarket & I looked at the health section and found
( yes, maybe I'm gullible!!) some appetite suppressant tablets. They're made from a plant, Caralluma adscendens, variety fibriata, and apparently people eat this plant in times of drought when food is not available; the body produces a hormone that makes you feel full. It is an Indian cactus plant. One brand is called Reducta and the other is just called Appetite Supressant by Swisse.
I thought, "I have nothing to lose," so I'll give it a try. Has anybody tried these? The fact is that since taking them I am eating less, but it could also be due to the fact that I'm determined to lose weight since I really hate carrying weight. Placebos would work with me at the moment
I struggled with my weight for years and the Paul Mckenna I can make you slim hypnosis cds (set of 5) worked great for me (strange the stop smoking cd didnt work though ).
I went from a size 14 to an 8 in just over a year. I had my son and ended up a size 16  I tried the gym and all sorts and managed to get into a loose size 14..dug out my cds and had a wee listen and am now in a size 10. The other bonus is I found them really relaxing and usually fell asleep listening to them
Just popped on here after a long absence and saw this thread - just wanted to add my advice.
I've only put on weight just recently - probably started putting it on in August/September - but it was from medical reasons (was put a drug trial - the side effects of which is increased appetite:confused:...). It really got me so down so I know exactly how some of you feel - just old, fat, and blah...
Anyway - after putting on 3/4 stone I joined Weight Watchers which I am very surprised at how easy it is. I have lost about 1/2 stone now but seem stuck at the last bit - but will wait now until after Christmas. But it does come off quite quickly at first.
It is easy - and the best bit is that you can snack on fruit and vege to your hearts content - and still have your favourite treats. Not once have I felt like I was depriving myself.
I think the best thing of all is gaining control again - which reminds me of the first few weeks of quitting smoking when I felt I could to it. It's a good feeling.
Join us in "until the pants fit" for sure! It has been quiet in there for a while, but I am sure there are members still around, 35 lbs down since I quit so far too!
