Hi Moody!!

I also work in an office, the day is punctuated by the before you enter the building fag, the 10.30, 12 noon, lunchtime on way out and back, and when you leave the office !

It is hard at first. For me there was only the 2 of us and seeing my smoking buddy go off for the breaks was a bit hard. I would go and make a drink and get a treat, biscuit or something and for 5 mins I would read the form or some of the stuff on whyquit.com. I printed stuff off from whyquit and stuck them on the wall and read them whenever times got tough, or I came on here for a rant. After a couple of days I could smell wherever my smoking buddy had been, it was horrid - a huge incentive. I love the smell of a freshly lit cigarette, but the smell on clothes etc is revolting.

At lunchtime make sure you go out for a walk, shop or whatever, try not to sit around moping.

Dont worry about your weight, I put on 11lb, 4lb gone already without too much effort.

It will get easier as the weeks pass and you are doing a wonderful thing. You will soon realise how stressed you were as a smoker and how much time you wasted. I get so much more done in a day and have bags more energy.

Read read read rant and have a laugh, good luck

How I got through the first few days

Golden rule I am using this time(!) is to break routine. The cig in morning -whilst kettle boils or porridge in microwave -replaced by changing order of my morning routine. Now shower first.

Don't carry surplus cash or credit cards -Don't be able to buy cigarettes!!!

Getting to work. I have strong air freshner thingies in car. And try to imagine what freinds/ passengers thought of my ashtray scented car in past. All were to polite to say anything of course.

Break times -WORK!!! Go to toilet or something. ANYTHING that is opposite to what they do. Lunch times -go into shops or anywhere that is smoke free. NOT a pub!!!

And just think of the smell!!! Yes all smokers smell of stale tobacco - No-one will ever tell you. It's like having B.O.!!!

and initially I made a note in my diary/ calandar of how much money I had saved on a daily basis!!! SHOCKING!!!!

Call me sad -I don't care!!! Have started a tapestry!!! And been making cakes for the office!! Anything that keeps my hands busy. I also drive home a different way -so as not to pass newsagents where I ALWAYS stopped at for repenishments. Now don't pass any shops. Problem solved!!! Secret is to plan ahead. It is a battle - me against the gremlins. They are evil little blighters. They know my routine. But so far I have tricked them!!!

thank you

thank you all for your replies. got me patch on and doing okay, had my last cig last nite at 7.30 and busied meself cleaning and washing anything that smelt of smoke, mind you, i never smoked in the house but it still seemed like i could smell it because i smelt of it.

to be honest i did enjoy smoking but didnt like the smell afterwards and i am now trying to get fit, ordered zumba, that should be a laugh, strictly behind closed curtains though,:o:)

we dont have shops around where i work so there are no chances for me to run along and pop to shop thankfully. doing this on my own and with this forum as my support. live on my own with teenage son and he is happy but never says anything because he has seen me try too many times and fail. fingers and toes crossed that im strong enough to do it this time. thank you again for your repies. i wish success to everyone who is quitting and has quit.xx:)

Bloody well done you! I found it hard to get in my stride at the office. I used those fag breaks as my break away from work. I tried to go for walks instead but in the end that just made me want to smoke! I found that by logging on to the NSD site was very helpful in managing my craves instead at the times I would have normally smoked.

Firstly a big well done on making the desicion to stop smoking! I also work in an office and quit cold turkey 28/02/11 and actually find being at work in a busy environment helpful to my quit.

I notice you use the term 'giving up smoking' instead of stopping smoking. It is important to understand you are giving up nothing except a life of slavery to cigarrettes. Read everything you can and be adamant that you will not smoke TODAY.

Take just one day, or hour if necessary, at a time and good luck! once you get past around 3 weeks you will not suffer physical cravings as such merely psycological triggers which are easily overcome.

Remember just one day at a time.

Hi MC, hope your quit is still going good and strong.

Wishing you all the best and willing you on.

i agree with the giving up/stopping psycology it makes a lot of difference my manager at work is 4 weeks into a quit wen he spoke about it he always said give up i mentioned to him that he shouldnt say giving up because he is not giving up anything and to say stopping or quitting

he looked at me abit strange but later in the shift he must have been thinking about it cause he came back and said your right thinking about it differently has made me feel much better about it
