Argh.

I feel very strange. Who is this person inhabiting me? I was afraid to get up this morning for what i might do. The first of the day is my thing. I get up, wash face, kettle on, outside. One, two and three. Until i feel ready for breakfast. Then another!

I haven't eaten anything today, other than strawberry laces and midget gems. Of which, along with my inhalator, have been permanently in my mouth. The patches seem to be doing very little for me. I know that if i eat a big meal, i'll want to smoke afterwards. That's my FAVE fag.

I just went to the co-op, feeling odd (I normally light up on my way down and buy fags in there, and had to walk past two kids smoking outside, and was met with the neon sign saying ' CIGARETTES' behind the counter. Great. I wandered around listlessly, buying bacon, pizzas, eggs, chocolate, cans of coke, sweets and such like, before getting a sudden urge to eat hash browns.

'OH, for GOD'S SAKE!!!' I thought. WHY THE HELL HAVEN'T THEY GOT ANY?? I want them!!!! NOW!! I just want them!!!!!! I need them!!' I went to the till, without making any eye contact.

'Anything else?' The assistant said.

'NO!' I shrieked. Looking longingly at the Marlboro.

I spent £15 on crap I didn't want, then went home.

Arrghhhh. Somebody tell me it gets easier, eh?

Hi - congrats for staying strong - though you do need to eat! Just wondering if u are using the inhalator properlly as it's really helping me, and last time the nurse told me I was doing it wrong lol!

With the mouth piece it should be pointing to the roof of your mouth about a cm behind your 2 front teeth and if your stuggling should be changed every hour .....

Try to keep your water intake up - the more the better and don't forget the fresh orange juice ( not from concentrate)

it will get better - and is worth this to be finally free - how many times have u stood outside in the freezing cold and rain!

Ah - I didn't know that - thanks Sue! Do you find it leaves a slighly mettallic taste in your mouth. They should make it thinner too!

See, I've had hardly any advice - i did it all so quickly. I was really frightened of quitting. I couldn't set a quit date or see a nurse - I had to do it THEN. Else i never would.

What day are you on? :)

Hi MM, well done to you for not giving in. I would strongly suggest you get doing some reading & NOW. There are lots of links in peoples signatures & posts on here that will help you. Apart from giving you lots of info & insight it will keep you away from the fags. I am on day 2, but not my first day 2.

Please, fill yourself with knowledge, it really does help you to understand what you are going through. Forearmed is forwarned :D

Hi I'm on the second day too. I find the same taste as well so brush my teeth more often. I was shocked when the nurse said last time I was using it wrong I was puffing on the inhalator like a smoke was killing the back of my throat lol! Apparently it works by the nicitine being absorbed through the roof of the mouth not down your throat lol!!! Short frequent puffs are the best way.

Ive tried many times so have had practice :-{ I've only once before lasted till the end of day two, I'm hoping that this time it's for good. The nasty comments of friends are annoying so much wish people would just leave me alone!

Hope you have eaten - stay strong x

Hi Sue,

Well frankly, those comments are just cruel & unhelpfull. I have posted on one of your other posts, can't remeber which one  I mostly smoked through both my preganancies (a long time ago now if you find the post lol). Things where not pushed down your throat so much then.

Ignore those people, you are doing what you can. In an ideal world you wouldn't smoke but we all know it is not that easy.

Keep your head held up high, you are trying now & that is all you can do. Hopefully you will succeed but if not you will have tried & just keep trying.

Only a smoker knows how hard this is & we are all here with you ok?

Thanks gaynor - I'm sure this time will be different - it's strange I really do feel ready and now is the time. My hubby has always said when the time is right I would give up I never believed him until today!

Its funny how some times a quit just feel right & are quite easy in the scheme of thing. The thing to do is not be complacent (as I have been) & keep it up. I am with you all the way, come what may & no pressure or guilt trips ;)

Arrghhhh. Somebody tell me it gets easier, eh?

It gets easier.

Even better it gets easier quicker once you know what to expect and how to react.

Very briefly..

1. Nicotine withdrawal.

It'll be gone from your system over a couple of days and you'll feel like you're coming down with a cold. If you want to avoid those minor feelings take some NRT and withdraw over whatever timescale you're comfortable with.

2. Stopping Smoking (physical)

Not inhaling smoke increases the oxygen levels in your blood making you feel odd, intoxicated and spaced out. Many report insomnia.

3. Stopping Smoking (mental)

This is your quit.

Every time a smoking opportunity arrives your subconscious will prompt you to smoke. It doesn't make the blindest bit of difference whether you're sucking on an inhalator or whether you've smeared peanut-butter on a piece of sellotape and slapped it on your forehead. You will be prompted continually until you decide to light up. You don't even have to smoke, just lighting up will kill the prompt.

The prompts don't happen when there is no smoking opportunity. Flying is a classic example. I believe that traditional flight smoking etiquette is to not think about smoking until about 30 minutes before landing, panic through customs and baggage retrieval and then rush outside and smoke 2 with the cab drivers.

If you can convince your brain that you're on a flight that's never going to land then the prompts will be non-existent.

OK, it sounds a bit weird but we know that prompts don't occur when smoking is not permitted so the trick is to convince your subconscious that from now on that it's prohibited continually.

If you can out-stare a mental prompt that manifests itself as a physical need you're laughing and each little battle gives you better ammunition for the next one.

The craves come thick and fast in the early days but slow down due to the prompts being less regular. For example you get the morning prompt every morning whereas the lying on a beach in the sun prompt is a little less frequent!

Never forget that it was YOU who forced your subconscious to allow your lungs to admit smoke into them when the natural reaction is dramatically the opposite and it is YOU who has to put a stop to it.

Education is the key. :)

(well for me it was brief... ;) )

Don't let peoples comments get to you. Seriously, people are very reactionary about smoking whilst pregnant - i can't judge you - its a stressful time being pregnant and i always feared that i couldn't give up if i was forced to by pregnancy. thats what people forget.

Like you, I've had people making silly unhelpful comments, my best friend thinks this is kind of funny. I've had smokers 'supporting me' by going on about how they love fags too much and their life would seem lacking and they are going for one now, but fair play to me. Last night my FRIEND rang me to see how i was doing smoking down the phone. my best friend thought i was lying when i said i'd gone four days. This guy I like is being supportive, but slightly treating me with all the suspicion of a drug addict who has been clean for a week. its like he thinks i'll go back. Mum is acting like stopping smoking is like giving up cakes.

Only we understand. Nobody is judging you here. Shheessh! Hearing all these non-smokers unhelpful judgemental comments, makes you wanna become a cool smoker again.... *runs and hides*

Hearing all these non-smokers unhelpful judgemental comments, makes you wanna punch those cool smokers in their smoky, wriggle-lined mouths and hold your nose whilst laughing at them coughing.... *smiles and chortles*

Sorry, couldn't resist ;);)

I felt very similar to you in the first week and am now sporting an attractive extra roll around my middle to prove it. But that's okay, cos i stuck with it and still feel better for smoking. Honestly, the first milestone of a week feels amazing, and then the first month, the first time you run up some stairs (or whatever) and notice you can actually breath and so on.

Yeah, that and I guess I'll have more money left for Botox and collagen to undo my years of smoking...

Everyone's a winner....:D

Amen (and the glass of Shiraz in my hand) to that :p

Off to dream about being smoke free (tick) and slim (hmmmm, yeah alright, one out of two ain't bad!) in 2011. Oh, and Billie Joe Armstrong will probably make an appearance too ;)

Take it one moment at a time, you´ll get there :) If anything emotional or food-wise comes up, why not treat that? Just a thought.
