Ok, here goes. It's time to get serious. I'm going to beat this bleeding addiction. I need to grab the bull by the horns and stop messing around.
The hardest time of me is when I'm at work as basically that is where I do most of my smoking. I occasionally smoke in the evenings and at weekends. I'd like to say that work keeps me occupied but it doesn't so I have a lot of time to think about "cigarettes". Has anyone got any advice they could give me as to how I can occupy my mind (bearing in mind I am at work and should be working! lol).
My last cigarette was at 12.25pm today. Do I count this as Day 1 or will tomorrow be Day 1?

You can do it, just don't light another cigarette and by tomorrow you will have your first day done and dusted, By the weekend you will be past your 3 days milestone!!!

Hi Debbie
First things first well done on your quit give yourself a pat on the back, it is the best thing you will ever do, i find it is good to read all about smoking and the effects not just on your body but mind too.....
here are a few links for you too read it will help you pass the time at work and you look busy as well
what will also help is to come here everyday and read people success stories get motivation from fellow new quitters there are mini groups of people together helping each other out ..in fact i am sure there is a november quit group where everyone chats and help each other out , anyway i wish you luck Debbie and remember the hard part is done now you have decided to quit .

Ok Im about to enter day 9 going cold turkey .
I have the same problem with you work was my usual place that I did most of my tempting cigaretes (socializing with collegues at brakes etc).
I will be honest with you , I think there is no magic dust that will make you forget about smoking this I guess hapen gradually over time
You must endure the cravings and leave tobaco behind
I see chaotic change in my quit from day 1-3 to day 7++++
Thanks everyone for your replies, support and encouragement.
I'm full of fear about going to work tomorrow without any cigs. I just don't know how I'm going to get through the day at the moment.
I'm very confused as to which is best - NRT or Cold Turkey. I've been looking at whyquit.com and they say you should go CT and not use NRT as it prolongs the withdrawal. I'm planning to use patches and lozenges but maybe CT is the way to go?
When I quit smoking I was on vacation and I really dreaded returning to work. I just new that it was going to be real hard. It turned out to be the easiest place for me to be. I did not have smokes and I would have had to leave to get some. Also you could only smoke in designated areas so I just avoided these areas and chewed gum. So stay away from the smoking areas.

Booper since you read Whyquit you understand the power of nicotine
the longer you will take to brake bonds with her the more you will torture your self
You will have a bit of nicotine in your blood but not the amount your body needs to not give you craves ,
You will be in a slow motion type of crave I think till you break your contact with nicotine.
Beter hold your breath for 3 days and go through the withdroual simptoms once and for all.
Thats my opinion , but then I can only speak about my self , as said before all methods are good as long you dont smoke and keep your quit.
Hope you're still doing ok! I have just done pretty much the same thing, had a cig in my lunch break then thought NO! So bought some gum which is now lodged in my cheek (icky) and I am very nervous about this afternoon- I always have a fag about 3pm- danger time! Then again on my way to the bus stop- then when I get in the door! So many 'usual' times, facing each one seems like climbing a mountain! Good luck
Ok this isn't going so good. Yet again I have failed miserably. Why am I making this so hard on myself??? I desperately want to give up but I'm finding it soooo difficult.
Oh, you sound so sad. Most of it (I think after a hard few days!) is mental, i.e. a major adjustment in your thinking. I really looked hard at why I've been smoking all these years, and embarrassing as it was, it has helped in my resolve NOT to start again. I stoppped the gum today, last bit yesterday evening, and it's been ok today.
I'm so sorry you feel bad, but maybe have a closer look at what smoking means to you? It may help. It's helped me- made me feel like a bit of a twat, but it has helped.

Why you being so hard on yourself Debbie ?. its like a driving test not everyone passes first time, you have to get behind the wheel and drive again. Relaxing about it is the key it has taken a long time to decide you dont want to smoke anymore so when your ready try again dont put added pressure on yourself that is a sure fire way of failing, take each day as it comes visit here have a moan rant grab a quit buddy and do it together help and encourage each other, but one thing is for sure you dont want to smoke and thats half the battle keep trying Debbie you will get there
Thanks Vivenne and a special thanks to you Bradders.
You're right I shouldn't keep beating myself up but I've been trying to quit since February and it's been so hard. I just feel a complete and utter failure.
You didn't so much fail as have a false start - like I did! I tried cold turkey, and caved exactly 24 hours in - but I wasn't gonna let it get me down - I smoked for another day to get my head in the right place then started again with a patch stuck to me bum.
Now it's 5 and a half weeks later and I'm still clean (and fresh smelling mmmm!), and about to go down to the lowest strength patches.
The patches helped me as it was the habit I needed to get out of more than anything, and they took the edge off the cravings while I was un-teaching myself. I think I'm out of the habit enough now so that when I go completely free of them I won't even know what to reach for if I crave anything!
Thanks Vivenne and a special thanks to you Bradders.

I'm still going to give it a go tomorrow.
Will keep you posted.

Ok gonna look out for you post tomorrow
p.s how can you be a failure when you have just made the biggest decision of your life ... you sound like a winner to me
It's been 4 hours since my last cigarette. I can't stop thinking about it - even though the last few I had really tasted awful and I hated every moment of it. It's funny how easily you can forget how bad it is/was?
Hi Debbie and welcome to our cyber home. You have made a great decision to stop smoking, well done. There's lots of reading material in our signatures and stories from other members, help yourself and come here and tell us how you are and ask for what you need.
We smoked for a long time and many times a day so it is quite normal to think about them a lot at the start. Find something to distract yourself, whether it be reading, tv, exercise, walking or chatting on here etc.
Not doing so good today. Succumbed to a couple of fags. I'm going to postpone my no smoking until the weekend so I can have a think about what I really want to do.
Boober - not sure if you're trying CT or NRT. I'm on Champix and it totally killed the craving for nicotene in me (couple of side effects, but worth it). I'm on day 23 and I've never not smoked for this long. You sound like I was - wanted to stop but couldn't so that's why I went to my Doctor and asked for the help. Worked for me, but as others have said, read the links and other people's posts and you'll know what to do for yourself.
Oh- don't beat yourself up -you're fighting a very strong drug. I've lost count of the number of times I tried before now. Just don't give up giving up.
Well only you know when it is time for you to quit. I have been in your shoes and know exactly what you are talking about, heck I'm only on Day 3 cause I would quit for a couple of days and go back and then quit, so this time I've got 2 girls and they both smoke, so one has given up CT and the other will be going CT in the next day or so. So, I feel like I need to set an example even though I HAVE to use something to help me so I'm using patches, but I want to show them it can be done and plus I want to feel better exercise and walk without getting out of breath, and I have felt great these 3 days!
You just take your time and when you are ready we will be here to support you and don't beat yourself up.
