Am I going to die ?

Well, I just reached 3 months on the 17th September.

No patches or other expensive placebos used. I realised that I didn't actually need the cigarettes, probably something that any successful giver-upper realised a long while ago.

I still get the urge for a cigarette occasionally, usually after food, but don't need a cigarette, urge disappears fairly quickly.

I have put on weight, I feel like I am not eating more than normal, but I probably am, the extra weight and enlarged stomach seems to have caused me to suffer with a shortness of breath.

Before the shortness of breath was an issue, I felt like I was coming down with flu about 2 weeks after stopping, but to date have not developed a cough to clear out my lungs, in fact, I never really coughed as a smoker.

The shortness of breath is a problem, I feel I need to check my eating habits now, but a good thing is it is a deterent to taking up the cigarettes again as well as the shortness of breath being a bad sign.

So, am I about to die, or should I stop worrying and approach my doctor for the best way forward.

I think that I have done fairly well so far without the NHS chemical support.

I did try nicotine replacement last year, realised that nicotine is not addictive, so stopped the harmful patches and stuff.

I ended on that cigarette that tasted like s**t and so far have not looked back, I didn't 'Give-Up' exactly, I am seeing how long I can go without a cigarette, so far 99 days.

I am not looking for any 'Well Done's' etc, just some advice on whether I should seek medical assistance on my shortness of breath and lack of a smokers cough.

I would get checked out by a doctor for shortness of breath. It could be ashtma or copd........other than that I never coughed as a smoker, theres no law saying you have to.Yes you and I are going to die but hopefully not for alittle longer due to our quitting smoking.

Right

1) Lack of cough - not everyone get it so if you haven't don't worry.

2) Short of breath - See a doctor. If its not a problem then you've lost nothing but if it needs treatment then the sooner you know the better.

I know you are not looking for well done's but none the less you should appreciate that you have achieved something that many smokers would be quite envious of!

All the best

Nic

Yeah, figured that the sensible approach would be to just go and see the bloody doctor, just being a typical bloke I guess.

BTW, I am 36 years old, smoked for about 16 years and eats too much.

I too went through sever chest pains and ended up in A&E and was told it's normal for ex smokers to feel all kinds of strange things due to the nicotene leaving our bodies. Go see your Doctor and talk to him about it I'm sure you'll be fine.

And substitute food for water, carrots or other healthy options and stop winging and find a remote control that should sort your ailments out!!

Yes you are going to die. So am I.

But hopefully not for a very long time.

Anything health related that concerns you should be cause for a trip to the Doctor - even if it's nothing, its worth going if it bothers you.

But eating a healthier diet, drinking plenty of water and a bit of excercise can't hurt either.

Hi, I would always suggest that you see a doctor if you anyway worried about your health.

TBH I was quite scared when I was around 3 months into my quit, I have been going to the gym and thought that I was pretty healthy - then all of a sudden I couldn't walk up the gym stairs let alone complete the circuit. It was quite scary - and - although the doctor I saw was not much help - I felt all the better in my head for going, he did sound my chest and said it was all clear - he prescribed me with a asthma inhalalor - saying if would not be a permenant thing, explaining something about the tubes had narrowed and would re-oppen eventually?????? - am much better now - BUT - not yet as fit as I woukld have hoped.

regards

Sue
