I am now into my third week and well into being a non smoker. I've found it relatively easy apart from the first 3 days and have just got on with it without much pain.
But... in the last two days I have had such a sore throat and feel really under the weather. Do you think it could be an effect of giving up? I haven't found my new lease of energy from giving up yet but I'm sure that will take some time. I just wish this sore throat would go away, I never usually have them.

I had a freaky sore throat for a while, I heard it is because smokers form different bacteria or summat
Anyway stay with it, that energy increase is just around the corner (hopefully)
Take it from someone who used to nap after dinner and sleep in everyday. Now i'm up with the larks (ask anyone who I email) and am not half as tired in the evenings.
you are doing really well and are probably over the worst of the worst.
The sore throat is common in many quitters and you may feel "chesty" for a while too. It should be a sign that your lungs are clearing. However don't let it go on for too long before going to the doc!
As far as i know, none of us on here are doctors and any symptom you feel unhappy with should be checked out professionally.
I started to find my fitness levels noticably increased after about 5/6 weeks but again we are all different depending on how many smoked per day and length of time smoked etc.
Just remember that quitting smoking is probably the single most important thing you can do for the benefit of your health and you are already part way down that road.

Well done Lighters - with regard to the sore throat someone on here (I think it was Lady Sa) suggest frozen grapes as an alternative to sweets, but I found it also helped with the dry and sore throat I got. Let us know how you get on but as John says don't let the sore throat go on too long without seeing your doctor.xx
Yeah, I've still got my sore throat (about a week now). Lozengers help but I think I may need to see a doctor.
My immune system must be right down as now, I have an absess/boil thing under my arm, a sore throat and am so incredibly tired.
I put it down to giving up smoking as I'm rarely ill. As I live in Dubai, it's incredibly hot outside and incredibly cool inside so it can't be good, going from hot to cool all the time!!
I've just got to think of it as all the badness coming out of me!
I think you should go and see your doctor just to be on the safe side as like you say you have had it for a week now. I think as well that smoking masked a few things like catching virus's getting colds etc as I had a really nasty cold and the beginning of my quit followed by sore throat but for the first time in years and years it didn't end up on my chest as in previous smoking years it always would end up on my chest for weeks and weeks and I would need antibiotics to shift it.
Dubai sounds nice, it has been raining non stop here for ages but it is sunny this morning so am going to go now and get ready for work etc, speak soon
I have had throat infections before, but am hoping it's just a side effect of not smoking- and will clear soon- it is more noticeable in the morning-not so bad now. Also very tired ( as always) but it's the end of term, and as a teacher I'm always weary. I do hope I have an energy burst!
Also, have you had any weird dreams about smoking? I dream I've had a cig and feel so awful and ashamed, makes me more determined the next day-
I also think the sore throat is helping me not to give in- reminding me about all the nastiness of smoking- I also think about the badness coming out
I'm into my 3rd week and also have a sore throat! I never get ill either so I'm guessing its down to the shock of my body not inhaling poisonous, searing hot fumes.
I hope you've been to the doc Lighters, your boil doesn't sound too pleasant. I hope its better soon.
We all have real tiny hairs inside our lungs that natuarily move, this hairs stop moving in smokers lungs causing all the bad stuff to get trapped in our lungs and not being able to clean them how theya re suppoes to. When you stop smoking (and this si ahead from the first few days or 2 weeks) your hairs will start recovering that natural movement little by little as they dont know where to move they crash together sometimes making you cough, this si good as it will helo you clean your lungs so dont worry if you are coughing up it doesnt mean you damaged your lungs so bad that u have this ugly cough it just means your lungs are cleaning up, if u want to spit the cough go ahead and spit it out you might also find yourself sneezing in the mornings when you wake up.

That's interesting I saw a 35% improvement in upon repeating a specific exercise just 30 hours after my last fag, due to the carbon monoxide leaving my system, so I would be seriously chuffed if there were a noticeable improvement in fitness above and beyond that.
I must training harder now as despite the increase in "naughty" calories I'm tanking in I haven't put any weight on yet.
Sore throat: yep waking up with a bit of a croaky throat too.
Hi I havent had a sore throat as such but it is a bit gritty! Ive heard this is quite normal, Ive noticed my taste buds have definately changed! Some food I liked I dont now as its either too bitter or too salty or just tastes weird!!hahaha

beware...I too thought I'd got away without putting on any weight - I was ridiculously careful to make sure I didn't replace cigs with food but...
after five months:(, the weight has started piling on:mad: and I'm really pi**ed off about it!!
******
as for the fitness...I haven't found any change in my fitness levels sadly - but this is one of the reasons I say to everyone, the younger you are the better the benefits will be - don't leave it as long as I have where the damage is done...permanently
After I quit I had illness after illness after illness...including a severe infection which led to hospitalisation...I kept saying that it was cos I'd quit smoking - I was never ill when I smoked:confused: It undoubtedly added to the difficulty of my quit but I stuck to it...
BUT it's the body adjusting to our new lifestyles and it will settle...
hopefully you all have superfit lives ahead of you...
Well that was posted just before I had a 4 week break from exercise due to holidays and colds. As of last week I had put on about 5 lbs and lost lost some muscle so that must been at least 8 lbs of fat gained
This week I've gone to town with the exercise, eaten less rubbish and can already see an improvement but I haven't weighed myself!
However, I'm off out for a skin full tomorrow so that will undo and good
I also have a wierd chesty thing, very much in my sinuses all the time, sore nose and dry chestyness (mmm yummness!) also feeling tiard all the time!! Haha 21 tomorow and having to take naps!!!
Hope you are feeling better, keep me posted with how you are getting on and remember it is all part of the detox.
