Hey, so I’m quite new to forums in general - but think it’s time to try some extra support since I’ve been wanting and trying to lose weight for some time and been unsuccessful alone.

I currently weigh 13stone 5pounds, and am considered obese which was a huge motivator for me to seriously try harder as the weight has just been creeping on.

A little about me, again not sure if I am posting in the right place... but

I do take meds that don’t help with weight gain if anyone has any tips for pills that make your appetite increase etc would be great!

I am struggling a lot with this weight gain as only a few years ago I struggled with an eating disorder for some years and was underweight. So I’m wary of dieting also as I don’t want to slip into unhelpful habits. So getting the balance right is the key.

Binge eating is my down fall I can be really good all day and then have the urge to binge which ruins it all.

Hope I can be of help to anyone, hope I haven’t rambled too much!

Hi Spence. When I joined here 3 years ago, I had also not used forums but found that it's the support here that keeps me going and has helped shape many of my ideas about myself and what I do.

Since you joined, have you joined in the regular events such as the Weekly weigh-ins and the Daily Diary?

In the last few months I've gone right off track due to home circumstances (what a weak excuse) but anyway, I find that coming here regularly, helps maintain focus and there's always plenty to learn (as we don't know as much as we think we do).

You didn't ramble too much... people have to put up with my rambling :)

Good luck!

Welcome back Spence

If you haven’t already then please have a good read of the Pinned Posts here healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... this is where you will find all the information you need to find your way around

As you were advised last time, nothing beats joining in, reading posts and replying to others. Our group Weigh-in and the Daily Diary are probably the best places to start.

Best wishes in your weight loss journey

Hello, Spence14, I was around your weight when I joined the forum a couple of years ago and seeing that word, obese, put the wind up me, too :)

I can understand what you're saying about being wary of dieting because of eating disorders in the past, and your tendency to binge eating. That's important to keep in mind and it may well be that calorie counting isn't the right route for you as it can trigger obsessive behaviour.

How about taking a kindlier look at food and yourself? Fill your shopping trolley with real food, plenty of veg, especially above-ground veg, natural fats like butter and olive oil and coconut oil for cooking, eggs, dairy (go for the full fat versions as they haven't been heavily processed and you'll find them more filling), nuts, olives, oily fish and meat without the fat taken off it. Try some new ingredients and and cereals: these carbohydrates are quickly changed to sugar in the bloodstream. Aim for a healthy lifestyle you can enjoy and continue for life :)

I recommend joining a weekly weigh-in team: I found it wonderful for team support: in fact, I'm going to rejoin the Sunday team as I'm on the verge of being back in the overweight category, having reached a healthy BMI after a year here. Also, I use the Daily Diary to post my meals plans, as a reminder to myself, and to pinch ideas. You'll find them both in Pinned Posts and IndigoBlue has given you the link

Hey Spence. I was on anti depressant that is an appetite stimulant but no one one told me of the side effect so I just stuffed my face & thought I was a greedy pig. I am sure that just being aware will help, but low carb high fat could also help - sugar & refined carbs tend to stimulate appetite, while fat like cheese & other full fat dairy will fill you up.

Hi, Spence14 , welcome.

I am only a kilo or three from being under-fat - but my weight is stable, and has been for almost six months.

If you "slim smart" weight loss is not so hard! It is not all about motivation and masochism.

Some of us here find that what works is a combination of The Low Carbohydrate, High-Fat (LCHF) diet (see the forum here on Health Unlocked) and Not Snacking All Day AKA Intermittent Fasting (IF). See:
