Lipoic acid update

Thanks to everyone who has responded to my post about lipoic acid.

I have contacted my neuro and my PCP. Here is what my neuro said:

"Alpha lipoic acid has no known interactions with Ocrevus. However, you should check with your primary care provider regarding interactions with any other medications that you are on. [Neuro] recommends starting with 300mg twice a day, then increasing to 600mg twice a day after 3 weeks. " (My neuro is a big no-side-effects and titration proponent.)

My PCP gave me the green light and told me to take 600mg. I am taking 600mg once a day until I see her in a month.

Thanks to erash who pointed out that diabetes and other health conditions do not allow for lipoic acid treatment.

Also, maybe it is obvious to everyone, but I was surprised to find out that there are two kinds of lipoic acid - alpha and R. We need alpha, as ordered by my doctors.

IFwczs Thank you for this info. I have posed a question to my neuro and will let all know what response that I get. :-D

I am diabetic and take Alpha Lipoic Acid. erash pointed out that it can interact with diabetic medications, but not that you can't take them. I have had to reduce my diabetic medication because of the effects of ALA with my a1c results. For me ALA has many other benefits as well. As with any supplement it is good to find out how they interact with the meds you take and/or talk to your doctor about them.

Thanks! For the update esp @ alpha vs racemic. It’s not that diabetics can’t take, it’s just that they should be aware it can lower blood sugar.
