Magnesium is a life saver for me! Reduced OCD!

Hi all!

I've been dealing with OCD for quite a long time, almost nothing helped me to really reduce it, but several months ago I read from one reddit useu that magnesium helped him a lot with OCD.

After a ton of research I found out that magnesium is actually NMDA antagonist, it's basically functioning the same way in that regard as ketamine, and ketamine showed to be super effective in some cases of OCD. I also found out that you should avoid magnesium glutamate and aspartate, since those actually activate NMDA. My doctor told me to keep an eye on glycinate because glycin can activate NMDA too, but reddit user used glycinate with no problem.

I also found out that absorption of different types of magnesium is pretty much a myth. The only importan thing is how much ELEMENTAL magnesium is in tablets. For example, you can buy tablets with 200mg magnesium, but it's 200mg of compound, and there is only 16% of elemental magnesium.

So I went to labdoor.com and searched to see which magnesium have 200mg of elemental magnesium in tablets, and I ended up with NOW Magnesium Citrate.

After about 5 days I could clearly see the results! It was life changing! It really put OCD in the background of my life. It's still there, but again, it's in background, don't know really how to describe it.

TRY IT! You have nothing to loose. Go with NOW Magnesium Citrate tablets of 200mg, I take 500mg a day (be careful with tablets, when broken in half they can be tough to swallow) as recommended by my doctor, tho RDA is about 400mg, and take them for at least 5 days. You should also know this works best with CBT, ERP, ACT therapy techniques, since magnesium reduces your OCD, it's easier to reduce it even more with techniques. Also, notice, I feel sometimes a bit blue after prolonged usage, but then I just stop for some time until I notice OCD is coming back and start taking magnesium again. I've been on it for about half a year now.

P.S. There is growing evidence that many psychological dissorders are problems with excitotoxicity. There are other supplements that help with excitotoxicity, some people improved with Vitamin D too (selenium, zinc, vitamin C and E also combat excitotoxicity, but really I need only magnesium and maybe sometimes vitamin D). Glutamate is one reason of excitotoxicity, and there is a case of a man that cured his OCD with low free glutamata diet. The professor that led reaserch gave me the diet, but it didn't do anything for me. As I did my bloodwork, I have high homocysteine and low B12 and folate. High homocysteine is also excitotoxic, so I think that is my cause of OCD. So you can check your homocysteine, B12 and folate levels too. Btw, I will upload the free glutamate diet later in another thread.

Stay strong! The science is progressing, and there are new solutions every day.

EDIT: IMPORTANT!!! I'm not a medical advisor, this is just my case. You should always consult health professional. People react differently to supplements. If you feel that it's not working for you, you should stop taking it and consult your doctor.

Thanks for sharing! Interestingly enough I am being checked now after my blood results showed high homocysteine and low B12, low D...so I am having supplements of Vitamin B, folic acid, vitamine D...so let's see how it works. I don't want to have homocysteine high if I can avoid it...I'll try magnesium as well.

Very interesting, keep us updated! Btw, you should know that it takes some time, probably couple of months to get vitamin levels in normal and lower homocysteine.

This is not what my doctor said or my pharmacist. They said to me to first get my levels checked because magnesium can severally harm some people. I said but it's just a vitamin and they both gave me stories about people that it harmed with their hearts and because they had diabetes amongst other things. I forgot the percentage but something like 80% of Americans are magnesium deficient. Other websites had different percentages but it's alot. I really didn't want to take time to write when I need sleep but I want to me sure no one gets hurt unnecessarily. I was severally deficient and started the first night with only 100mg. I'm not trying to start a rift but most of the info here was opposite of what I was told. It says here that 400mg is what we should take BUT not correct. It would depend on age and sex. Also my doctors and the fda said I believe 320mg was the max. Not quite sure at this point but it was under 400 mg. Also every single website I've studied intensely plus doctor said all forms of magniseum weren't good because we only absorb about 4% of the 200mg when it's magniseum oxide for example. The only magniseum that is absorbed and crosses the blood brain barrier is magniseum glycinate. Before I studied deep I ran out and grabbed the first magniseum bottle I could find and took it dedicatedly and.. nothing. I bought another kind and zero and this went on for months. Finally when I was told from the doctor about the magniseum glycinate I ran to find that and I didn't want to take too much until I got my results to see if I was even deficient and needed it. I was desperate for something to finally work. I took only 100mg and within only maybe 30 minutes I felt a mind calm come over me. I almost cried because I hadn't felt that in almost 36 years of debilitating OCDummyD. When my anxiety level went down and I felt calm.. I just didn't want to focus on the OCDummyD anymore. For me it worked. Afterwards I was able to increase the dosage. I know a person can feel desperate but if you've waited this long.. be safe and wait a little bit more (until you get your results and ask your doctor that knows you personally if and how much to take). My only suggestion is If you want to waste time and money like I did then take another form but I highly suggest taking the doctor recommended absorbable magniseum glycinate that can get to that unsettled brain and calm it down. The author was correct about what they said about elemental magniseum and other things you can be deficient in. Vitamin D deficiency can make you have anxiety too BUT do your research because taking vitamin D can bring your potassium down and hurt you. However if you need it (after checking blood work) it can make you feel so much better. Selenium and zinc were on the list also of what many are deficient in and can cause anxiety. I don't remember the other deficiencies that can cause anxiety. Last thing for now is the pharmacist told me that any vitamin (mineral) that comes in the glycinate form is far better than other forms because they are absorbed far better whether it's magniseum or whatever else. I don't know why the author said that other than not enough research or maybe they just thought it but very incorrect. Search and do you're own studies. Look up "which is better absorbed oxide or glycinate". I'm a great grandmother that has spent 99% of my adult life alone, unloved and misunderstood because of debilitating anxiety in the form of OCD and PTSD. Thank God I'm finally over with the literal torment! I would never wish this on anyone and would do anything to help someone get over this so they can begin to live. THIS is why I stayed awake to write this. Good night and God bless.

Everyone keeps saying it takes time but it only took me less than 30 minutes for it to start making me feel better. Sure since I just started the right kind (magniseum glycinate) days ago maybe it'll take longer to feel good 24 hours a day. As soon as I get the results in I'm maxing the dosage because I want more of this.

How is your son now?

Hello, thanks for this message. I bought it for my son. How are you now? My son has B12 deficiency as well. He has anxiety because of the intrusive thoughts. It's so sad. He is very sick because of his deficiency. 10 months on injections. First every 72 hours and now every 48 hours. No improvement, nothing.
