Hi all!
I've been dealing with OCD for quite a long time, almost nothing helped me to really reduce it, but several months ago I read from one reddit useu that magnesium helped him a lot with OCD.
After a ton of research I found out that magnesium is actually NMDA antagonist, it's basically functioning the same way in that regard as ketamine, and ketamine showed to be super effective in some cases of OCD. I also found out that you should avoid magnesium glutamate and aspartate, since those actually activate NMDA. My doctor told me to keep an eye on glycinate because glycin can activate NMDA too, but reddit user used glycinate with no problem.
I also found out that absorption of different types of magnesium is pretty much a myth. The only importan thing is how much ELEMENTAL magnesium is in tablets. For example, you can buy tablets with 200mg magnesium, but it's 200mg of compound, and there is only 16% of elemental magnesium.
So I went to labdoor.com and searched to see which magnesium have 200mg of elemental magnesium in tablets, and I ended up with NOW Magnesium Citrate.
After about 5 days I could clearly see the results! It was life changing! It really put OCD in the background of my life. It's still there, but again, it's in background, don't know really how to describe it.
TRY IT! You have nothing to loose. Go with NOW Magnesium Citrate tablets of 200mg, I take 500mg a day (be careful with tablets, when broken in half they can be tough to swallow) as recommended by my doctor, tho RDA is about 400mg, and take them for at least 5 days. You should also know this works best with CBT, ERP, ACT therapy techniques, since magnesium reduces your OCD, it's easier to reduce it even more with techniques. Also, notice, I feel sometimes a bit blue after prolonged usage, but then I just stop for some time until I notice OCD is coming back and start taking magnesium again. I've been on it for about half a year now.
P.S. There is growing evidence that many psychological dissorders are problems with excitotoxicity. There are other supplements that help with excitotoxicity, some people improved with Vitamin D too (selenium, zinc, vitamin C and E also combat excitotoxicity, but really I need only magnesium and maybe sometimes vitamin D). Glutamate is one reason of excitotoxicity, and there is a case of a man that cured his OCD with low free glutamata diet. The professor that led reaserch gave me the diet, but it didn't do anything for me. As I did my bloodwork, I have high homocysteine and low B12 and folate. High homocysteine is also excitotoxic, so I think that is my cause of OCD. So you can check your homocysteine, B12 and folate levels too. Btw, I will upload the free glutamate diet later in another thread.
Stay strong! The science is progressing, and there are new solutions every day.
EDIT: IMPORTANT!!! I'm not a medical advisor, this is just my case. You should always consult health professional. People react differently to supplements. If you feel that it's not working for you, you should stop taking it and consult your doctor.
