I have ET with Jac2 and take hydroxycarbamide and aspirin. Does anyone know, is it ok to have this Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine?

My thanks in advance for your replies.

When on HU what must be avoided is live vaccines. I believe the Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine is not a live vaccine. it should be OK. Please be sure to confirm with your care team as this is something you want to be absolutely certain about.

Thank you Hunter, from what I had read I couldn't tell if it was a live vaccine or not. As you suggest, I will check with my haematologist just to make sure it is ok for me to have it. Regards,

David

Hi dabs121 I had it last year and I take Hydroxycarbamide and aspirin. It's not a 'live' vaccine.

Hi Kari1961, Thank you for replying, hearing that you had it and are on the same medication is reassuring. I am slightly new to this game, so it is good to hear from somebody who has already received it. Regards,

David

Just had it last week with approval form my MPN specialist (as well as the shingles vaccine) - not a live vaccine

Hi, I have ET and take hydroxy + blood thinner. Had the same jab 4 months ago as well as flu jab with no problems in fact it makes me feel much safer, the more we can protect ourselves the better in my opinion.

Hi Janis, can you tell me what kind of a blood thinner you take. I have ET Jak2 and I am trying to get information on this and get some things sorted out at the moment. thanks

Hi, I take Clopidogrel as my blood thinner. Aspirin was suggested at first but I once had a duodenal ulcer so have to be careful with anything that has the potential to set this off again and also Hydroxycarbomide is a stomach irritant so that would be doubling the risk. My MPN specialist suggested taking Omeprazole to reduce stomach acid but this drug tends to thin bone with long term use and I already have low bone density so declined that offer. We have to stay one step ahead of the game and keep ourselves well informed .

Janis I appreciate knowing this. I couldn't take the aspirin and the doctor wants me to try this again and I have concerns. I am looking for a specialist to talk to. I did take a PPI before I had ET a couple of times for acid and also have low bone density. This is very good to know. Thank you again.

Hi Janis12, Thank you for your reply, it is most reassuring to hear from others who have had this jab with no problems. I agree, the more we protect ourselves the better. Take care.
