I have PV for 8 years and taking Hydroxycarbimine 1 G, asprin. I have just turned 70 and am eligible for the shingles vaccine. As this a live virus is it safe?
Thanks

Hi
Shingles vaccines arent advised for people with conditions like ours.
Of course check with your consultant but I think the advice will be not to have it.

Hi, there is a relatively new non-live shingles vaccine named Shingrix. As such, it is safe for people with MPNs. I have ET and myelofibrosis and have successfully taken it with no issues. Best wishes to you.
We cannot have any "live" vaccinations with these blood conditions & meds we are taking.
Hi Shingrix is not a live vaccine & I took it with no problem. Check with your doctor & make sure the pharmacy gives you exactly what your doctor ok’d.
It’s a tough call as shingles is the worst pain I have had in my life. I got it seven years post SCT as my immune system was wiped by the process and was rebuilding.
Live viruses are a tough call for us. My transplant doctors initially advised against the Measles jab for the same reason. However, with their agreement I had it two years ago as, courtesy of the idiot antivaxers , it is on the rise in Europe and worldwide and I travel. But then, having considered it, I opted not to have Yellow Fever (another live virus)as too risky. So some places now out of reach.
Best advice? Discuss with your MPN consultant.

I have been told that live vaccines are a no-go for people with PV, ie the regular shingles vaccine. Shingrex isn't a live vaccine, but it's not available where I live as there is a world wide shortage. Hope it doesn;t take too long to be available.
I had it two weeks ago Shingrix is not a live vaccine. My haematologist gave me my dose! Had no side effects. It’s a two dose vaccine so need to take second within 6 months of the first dose You need both for it to work
Thanks for all your replies, very supportive. I wasn't aware of Shingrix, non live vaccine, I will explore with GP.
yes I got mine as soon as I was old enough. NO problems for me
