Vaccination for the vulnerable?

Hi, it seems that adequate vaccines will soon be available, some say, that the "vulnerable" faction as we are considered to be will be among the first to be offered vaccination.

Thinking about those of us in the UK, will you be willing to have the vaccination? I am really in two minds about it. Even so I did hear that it takes about a month after having it for the vaccination to be fully effective?

Would be interested if anyone of a medical background specific to our cause has any input on how it might affect us please.

I have MF and am on Ruxolitinib. I really hope I will be able to have a vaccine but will take advice when the time comes. I expect we will have guidance from Prof. Harrison and colleagues.

Apparently the Pfizer vaccine is given in two shots 3 weeks apart. Without claiming any great insight, I'd assume that shot 1 starts protection that is reinforced by shot 2.

And for my part, I'll be barging my way to the front of the queue (suitably masked up and distanced likewise - if one can barge in a socially distanced manner that is).

I’ll take the vaccine but I would love to see workers take precedent over me. I’m retired and could isolate. They have mortgages / rent / children.

I will be taking vaccine providing that our MPN's medical professionals say it is safe for me to take it.

Theoretically, in the USA many of us would be Phase 2 roll out for vaccines. I doubt that there will be much information about any differences in how people with MPNs respond to the vaccines. There just is not enough time to find out. That is why I volunteered for clinical trials at Johns Hopkins should they decide to try to find out. No word on that unfortunately.

I think it is just going to be a calculated estimate of relative risk made by the hematologists who provide MPN care (aka - educated guess). We will also each have to make our own risk estimates. What do we fear more - the new vaccine or COVID? There really is not a universal correct choice since it is about personal risk tolerance. We will all have opinions, but our opinions really only apply to ourselves. No universal truths on this issue. We will all just have to do the best we can to make good choices for ourselves.

Jennytheb, even if these vaccines are effective be aware of the likelihood they may contain aluminium. Your health care provider can address your concerns. However, we come in contact with aluminum daily and although a percentage may pass without detox a continuing detox should be in place for it and other heavy metals.

I’d happily have it.

I really hope it works for two reasons, one being the obvious. The other, I hope humans can finally start to move on from animal testing and this will be an enormous step towards that.

Hello... I heard an expert last week .. CNN .. U.S News...Discussing all about Covid ..new vaccines...

Anyway this Dr / Immunologist/said to give this vaccine to people with already compromised immune systems (on going Disease)would be dangerous as their immunity would not be able to make up the necessary anti bodies (required response)needed to be safe ...As would a healthy person ...Could even cause more harm to them ...

This makes sense to me ... I am sad to say that I too do not have the trust / confidence ..I once had in the medical world .. I would not take the vaccine ...

But would wish all goodness & great results to those who do ...

Love to all ..Lainie 🙏

I would have it. Sadly extensive safety testing involves animals and years of work. I don’t think Covid-19 lends itself to that length of time.

You can test on as many animals as you think

Is necessary but you’ll only really know if it works when it’s tested on humans.

Personally I loathe animal testing and I really hope these vaccines work and prove we can find cures without having to do that. Millions of animals lives would be saved.

I do appreciate your views and understand your concerns. Several of my friends have said similar.

We do not in this case have much choice, never mind about animal testing, if you are a vegan, a vegetarian, what religion you are, or what skin you have, in this short a time, do you want to live? TAKE THE VACCINE! I have had serious medical conditions thoughout my life, I have had that many medical concoctions pushed through my body, my local chemist is 'sick' of the sight of me. I think that I have reached 64 years of age is a major medical miracle in itself. I am down on the list for a volunteer for vaccine research but like Hunter5582 acknowledged, but no comeback yet?

I've had meningitis, whooping cough, schwannomatosis, epilepsy [for fifty years], osteoarthritis, diabetes 2, shingles, angina, stroke, shattered rib cage, tumour on my spinal cord, fractured skull [3 times], etc, etc. I have not much time left on this earth, if this vaccine can give me a few more months I will be first in the queue, every time, as you can see from the list above I can never say that I have had a healthy or happy life, I live by medical help if you want to die by lack of it so be it ?

I have 2 things to say. Firstly we may not get it that soon as it’s all age related from what I’ve seen. Nothing in the criteria for order of those vaccinated first mentions job or vulnerability.

Second, it’s not just about us! That’s not why we wear masks so neither is it why we should get the vaccine. Just because you have never got flu and think you won’t get this (which has no link anyway) doesn’t mean you won’t pass it on to others. Please do not be offended. I’m not looking to cause an argument, just offering a different perspective.

Hi, no, I am open to all conversation about this and appreciate your points of view, all views are important.

It seems to be the elderly those over 85, and NHS workers, and the people who are disabled and most vulnerable, who will be entitled and first in the queue. We wear masks not just to protect ourselves, but we unknowingly might be carriers, with seemingly no side effects, thus we are protecting against everybody! Remember Covid does not respect Christmas so no cuddling over the festive season!
