Hi my friends, any advice as to what to do !! I have been told today that I am going to have a tooth extracted, originally had a gold crown on the tooth, but over the last few years it has eroded the tooth underneath and I now have a very bad infection which has also done damage, my dentist has removed the crown but half the tooth came away so now unable to save the tooth hence the extraction.
My question is do I need to stop my Hydroxycarbamide and Aspirin the day before removal or a couple of days before, or not
Have left messages for my nurse to call to ask her but so far have not heard anything from them, dentist needs to know.
Wonder if any of you lovely peeps have any idea never had a tooth out before must be an age thing 😂
Would be great to see if anyone has any ideas.
Ta folks

This is of course for your dentist to contact. My husband is a dentist and often contacts them to get up to date advice. Let us know how it goes!
When I had a tooth extracted I did stop the aspirin prior to and immediately after the extraction. Generally the recommendation for surgery is to d/c aspirin 7 days prior. For more minor procedures my docs have said 3 days is OK. Normally HU is not d/c, but your dentist does need to be aware you take it since it is a toxin. Avoiding contact with blood is a standard universal precaution so it does not really change anything the dentist will do.
Do please be sure to run this question by your MPN Specialist. Most dentists will be unfamiliar with MPNs and how they will impact any significant procedure.
The tooth is going to be extracted. The dental surgeon needs to know if you have clotting issues and stitch you up securely. I had a tooth extracted and the degradable stitches did not hold. He redid the stitches using silk thread. All is well now.
Hi there. I can’t see any reason to stop the Hydroxy but you will probably need to stop the aspirin a week before. Certainly that has been my experience before any surgery. Hope all goes well.
Not for an extraction, but something else she was unsure/concerned about, My dentist asked for my haematologist/consultant details and contacted them directly
Hi Jean,Just read your message and you've given me food for thought!!! Ironically I'm going to have 2 teeth extracted next tues and never occurred to me that possibly needed to stop taking hydroxy/aspirin, I'll be very interested if you could let me know if this would be necessary.
Hi Phyllis, you will need to get advice from your own haematologist about this, as it will be assessed on you and your blood counts and dose of medication you are taking, so the advice for Jean may be completely different to the advice you need to follow. Best wishes, Maz
Thanks Maz, my Haematology nurse called me back to say she has spoken with the Doctor, and she has said I must stop the Aspirin seven days before removal and not to take for at least twenty four hours afterwards, as my bloods are all well controlled at the moment no need to stop Hydroxycarbamide.Jean
Hi Phyllis, just been told to stop the Aspirin for seven days before and at least twenty four hours after removal.Must admit not looking forward to it, first extraction I have had, apart from wisdom teeth out as a young girl, what a whooze 🤪
I had major dental surgery a few years ago whilst on Hydroxicarbomide (had to remove an implant that refused to come out)and clopidogrel ( aspirin substitute) no need to stop the Hydroxicarbomide . Can’t remember about the other. My heamo prescribed medication incase I was bleeding excessively which I didn’t. Plenty of people take aspirin so your dentist can sort that one out. Hope all goes well.
Hey Jean, Just had a back tooth pulled last month that had decay under the crown. Stopped aspirin 5 days prior and blood thinners 3 days prior. Tooth cracked and came out in pieces. Oral surgeon stitched up my gum afterwards. Bleed a little but had me put a wet tea bag in the socket and this helped greatly with the bleeding. Didn't have to stop the Jakefi. Good luck to you and hope the procedure goes well.
Hi, when I had an extraction I was advised to stop aspirin prior to appointment however haematologist said to continue Hydroxycarbamide. I didn’t have excess bleeding and all was well. Good luck
Hi KentBee, thanks for that, exactly the same thing was told to me by my Haematology nurse who spoke with the doctor.Do you live in kent and keep Bees 🐝🤪I live in Kent so made me think you might also, but great name, mine being Superwoman, don't feel much like it at the moment, seems to be one thing after another, never had a tooth out before, well apart from wisdom as a young girl, Being a bit of a wooz and at my age as well !!
