Advice?

Hey guys,

Was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to get emotions out that feel stuck?

I had a panic attack today (they’re a common occurrence in my life) I’m on antidepressants (or AD’s as I call them & I can’t seem to express how I feel now I’m on them it just feels trapped & without going into too much detail I tend to scratch whilst I’m panicking to try ‘get it out from under my skin’ I’m sorry if this seems too TMI or anything.

I just wanted to know if anyone has any advice on what I can do to try stop feeling like my emotions are stuck.

Thanks

Megan

Hello Megan,

Welcome to our supportive community. Well done for taking a brave step out of your comfort zone to reach out for help. Hopefully, you will find folks here are only too willing to come alongside you and share from their personal journeys and experiences.

You are obviously having a difficult time right now, you are not alone in your feelings. I wonder if you have had a chat with your GP about how you are feeling currently? It maybe worth reviewing your medication, but also to ask for a referral to your local mental health services, as there is a range of therapies available that could help you, such as talking therapies. The scratching could a form of self-harm because you are finding your feelings overwhelming, take a look at this link about it on the Mind UK website:

I note from your profile that you are currently studying for a university degree, have you accessed student support services, as they should be very aware of the need to support students with mental health needs? As an aside, as you have a diagnosed mental health problem, you are eligible to apply for DSA (Disabled Student Allowance) that can provide you with specialist mental health mentors, who are highly qualified specialists in an area of mental health who support students to:

* Coping with the stresses and anxieties related to university life

* Providing specialist, specifically tailored support for students to address barriers to learning

* Building strategies to help with independent learning

* Addressing difficulties such as time management, prioritising workload and creating a work-life balance

Do check out our Pinned Post section for free mental health guides. As you live in the UK keep these crisis support helplines handy:

The Samaritans Tel: 116 123 [24 hours line]

NHS: 999 [Emergencies]

NHS 111 [Non-Emergencies]

MIND UK charity: Helpline Tel: 0300 123 3393 info@mind.org.uk Text: 86463 mind.org.uk/information-sup...

SANEline Tel: 0300 304 7000 [4.30pm – 10.30pm daily] sane.org.uk/

Keep in touch and take care.

Ok, folks what can you suggest to help this new member?

Best wishes,

MAS Nurse

Hello!

Thank you! It wasn’t the easiest to write this up to be honest.

I spoke to my GP just over a week ago and he’s currently put me on a trail of AD’s to try tackle it all, but I do feel like they have calmed the panic attacks but what happens during a panic attack has gotten worse.

Thank you for all the links! I’ll definitely look into the DSA I never knew that you could get specialists to help, my university know about my mental health but they don’t know the severity of it now because I’m on summer.

Thank you for helping ☺️

Hi,

Get your GP to write an updated report about your MH condition, increased meds, how it is impacting you etc., and submit to university in time for the new academic year to get support in place. Now is the time to apply for DSA, not in October. :-)
