CMHT referral

Hello again.

Today I discovered my counsellor and GP have been discussing me and they decided I need to be referred to CMHT. Now they've made the referral what will happen?

Could anyone tell me what to expect and what the process is please?

I feel like such a fraud and not sure I won't be wasting their time.

Ah, so now you have the answer to the question you posted the other day about the GP appointment !

There is nothing to worry about being referred to CMHT. They are just a team who specialise in mental health matters whereas the GP's generally have little training in mental health. Your counsellor may feel that you need this in order to get medication that suits you or get you further counselling or access to courses etc.

The best person to ask is the person who gave you this information. Please don't feel there is any stigma attached as many people see CMHT from people with anxiety and depression to bipolar and other illnesses. It is likely though that there will be a wait to be seen so in the meantime are you able to carry on with your counselling?

The CMHT are just a bit more specialised than your GP, as Gemma has said. I was referred three years ago when I went a bit crazy after my Mum died. I see the Nurse every two weeks or so and she supports me with medication and refers me to the Doctor on the team if I need to see him. It's not a bad thing x

I think it depends a lot on which CMHT you see. Because from my experience they just talk to you for half an hour then make you an appointment for 8 weeks later. I was under the impression that I was going for an assessment but in that time it's impossible. Get a mental health advocate to go with you if your nervous, they help you.
