I have had an awful day. I saw my gp, got given a sick line for work and had a complete meltdown. I rang the Samaritans who did help cause I could just cry and cry and I wasn't judged... My question is though can I self refer myself to be admitted to hospital as I don't trust myself...
Hospital self referral...: I have had... - Mental Health Sup...
Hospital self referral...
That's strange, my reply disappeared. It said you can walk into any A&E department and say you are feeling suicidal x
I'd recommend going to Accident and Emergency, too, as you are feeling suicidal.
Yes you can, I did!
And what happened Lucky? Did they help you and was it worth it?

Hi guys Thanks for the replies. Felt a little better today but its good to know.
Lucky I would be interested to know what happened with you if you don't mind.

Hi,
I was admitted as an inpatient for 3 months and given ECT - I needed it! It saved my life.
Lorraine
How did that happen pls , I really think its what i need as iv tried everything else .
Hi soozy1984
Glad to hear you are feeling a little better.
If you feel that you don't trust yourself it is important that you get help.
Take care,
Amanda
Hi, yes you can walk in and tell someone in A & E that you feel suicidal, if you are lucky that will result in a good experience of being helped but if you are not lucky it could result in you feeling worse if there is not help available. A better route may be to find a source of help that enables you to avoid getting to a suicidal state in the first place. You could refer yourself to the local primary mental health care team and let them assess what might help you to stop feeling suicidal, maybe coping strategies together with counselling, therapy or a support group. A & E services are notoriously overworked and although they are there as a last resort it sounds as though you want help and are able to ask for it. Do refer yourself and at least give that a go first if you have not done so already. I do hope you find support, Suex
Did your gp not suggest local mental health services for you? Making a referral? Sounds like you feel overwhelmed and desperate to me..which I totally appreciate. A&e may feel drastic but if your gp isn't listening I would go there, and yes you can be at the mercy of those on duty but a lot of people have really positive experiences as well and it gets things moving.....can you see another gp at the practice? If you're not finding your gp helpful you can change practices or talk to the practice manager.
You deserve help and support and you should have it. Xx
Well im seeing psychology on Wednesday for my first session. Ive waited 10 years for this. My gp signed me off work which seems to be the answer to everything!
When I posted this original message I was really desperate and needed help. I felt similar again today and considered this again. I definitely need some sort of care. Just not sure what... xx
I can understand some of what you've written, especially the last sentence! You offered me support when you were feeling so awful yourself, thank you! Psychology may not solve everything but having an opportunity to work with someone on your problems should be better than nothing. I presume you mean a Clinical Psychologist and that maybe you are being offered CBT? Or perhaps at this stage it is just an assessment interview? I do hope you find it helpful, if you feel you can't work with the particular person do ask if you can see someone else as we can't feel understood by everyone, different personalities suit different people.
I've also asked to be referred to the local PMHCT too and should have an appointment within the month so we can keep in touch about progress by writing here.
Good luck Wednesday, Suexx
We are all here for each other xxx
Ive had my assessment and the psychologist has decided I need one to one sessions. Im assuming it's CBT. I'm going to tell him how bad ive been since the assessment.
Sometimes I wonder if I'm bipolar because my moods are so erratic but then sometimes im not so sure.
Thanks hun bit nervous about my appointment xxx
Often the swing between positive and negative feelings is just that sometimes we can make an effort to overcome the negative feelings and sometimes we can't. Bipolar is really very different, the manic swings are completely out of touch with reality and result in chaotic acting out like madly overspending eventually resulting in exhaustion whilst the depressions are so deep that hospitalisation usually results - both extremes are psychotic. You are NOT psychotic, you have times when you can cope and times when you can't, when you can cope you feel free and elated so can feel high and when you can't you drop back down. That's not uncommon for what's called depression and although it can be just as difficult to live with as deeper black hole depression it allows you to be able to relate to the world at times. Many of us who write on the website have unstable depression because we have times when can empathise and help others and other times when we need help and have nothing to give, it's pretty normal for depression. I hope you find the one to one sessions helpful, it mostly depends upon being able to feel a sense of rapport with the therapist so if you find after a few sessions you do not feel that do say and ask if you can try someone else, it really matters whether you feel understood. Even if the experiences are difficult you should leave the first session especially feeling the person understands where you are coming from and what might be helpful for you. Hope it goes well, Suexx
you know that makes absolute perfect sense. thank you xxx
Glad the experience was positive for you. Very much looking in 2 minds about nyself. Hopefully I can hang on til Wednesday too see my psychologist xx
