Evening,

Had my 2nd apt today with Psychologist. She has advised that I would benefit from "Compassion Based Therapy" and would work with me for 9 months.

Has anyone had this therapy plus I didn't think it would take so long

Thanks

Hey Joe

Yes I have, it is an extension of CBT and deals with self esteem and self hatred. It can take time as often people with these issues have had them for a long time and changing the way the brain works after it has been working one way for years is not easy.

To get an idea of compassion based therapy google 'Paul Gilbert' he is one the leads in this field. He has a book 'A compassionate Mind' , on my shel for but not read yet BUT I have been recommended to read the second half of the book first as the first half is a bit heavy (it is and put me off as, tried it at the wrong time at the peak of a severe depressive episode).

Not sure where the 9 months comes from, but like all CBT you need to practice it in life, not just when seeing a therapist.

Worth giving it a go, it has started to change the way I think and I will be exporinh it further when I am ready.

Cheers, Matt

Hi, I would definately take advantage of this opportunity particularly if it is being offered free of charge. I have heard of it and it was offered to me but not on a day which I could make but it certainly can't do you any harm and I think it will do good. Gemma X

Hi Joe, I'm having compassion-focussed therapy at the moment. I was very seriously depressed and angry when I started the sessions (I think I first saw the psychologist in May) and it has taken a while to make sense of how it could work in my life and to start putting it into practice etc., so nine months sounds about right to me. I can't honestly say that I feel less depressed but it has helped in that it has helped me work some issues through and maybe I'd feel worse if I wasn't having it? Go with it and good luck.
