Borderline Personality Disorder

Hello all, this is the first post on mental health although I do post a bit for myself about arthritis and their help and advice has been brilliant.

Do any of you guys have any experience with Borderline Personality Disorder? My beautiful and loving daughter is suffering from this and when it is triggered she becomes verbally and physically aggressive. She has never hurt anyone physically but has smashed things up in the house and her actions have caused rifts in the family with some members of our family just cutting her out of their lives. Don’t get me wrong I understand why and I think she has wanted this herself because these people trigger her episodes and she would rather not have anything to do with them but in some cases it is close family members and friends and I would really love to see their relationship heal.

She is currently on a high and it’s lovely to see, she looks after herself well and her children and wants to make sure everyone is happy, but from experience this is usually the peak of the cycle and it’s hard to enjoy it because I dread what’s coming.

I have read the book Stop Walking On Eggshells which was good and done some research on the internet but I was really wondering if anyone on here has experience of BPD and has any advice on dealing with it?

Hi. My husband has bpd. It has been hard to support him in the past but it has got easier as he has got older and had lots of therapy. It was a long time ago (17 years) but I found the bpd survival guide book helpful. The biggest issues for my husband were dissociating and self harm. He no longer self harms and dissociating is about once a month for a short time compared to several days a week. He had counselling with a charity who only help people who have been sexually abused but this changed his life. I really did not think talking therapies could have such a positive impact, I didn’t think people could change. He also struggled sleeping and still does sometimes. Quetiapine helped with this but he did not like the side effects and came off it post counselling. Years of SSRI’s did not help him except to take the edge off initially. It sounds like your daughter has different symptoms. Within it all remember to look after and take time for yourself.
