Tamsulosin side effects

I have been on Tamsulosin for 5/6 weeks to treat urinary problems associated with an enlarged prostrate. I also take Sildenafil for long term ED.

I get by on my ED medication with mixed results, but the Tamsulosin is showing no difference in my flow rate and alarmingly my desire for sex has vanished, along with any erections, semi or otherwise. To masturbate flaccid is both difficult and soul destroying.

Is a change of either med strength likely to help?, is a different ED med better suited with Tamsulosin?

How long should i give Tamsulosin to start working?

Interested to hear from anyone with similar issues, and what worked for you.

As you can probably glean from my postings, I am a fan of both tamsulosin and tadalafil. I am sorry you are unfortunately having a negative experience

You seem to have given tamsulosin a fair trial having used it for over a month. Maybe it’s time to re-evaluate your medication with your doctor?

sorry to hear of your issues. How bad are rhe urine issues? I recently had a cystoscopy as am having similar issues mainly a feeling of urine retention and some frequency but not a night - can sleep 6/8 hours without needing to pee. Cystoscopy showed nothing to cause concern / no strictures and guess what no diagnosis but want to put me on tamosolin (same as you). I’ve told the GP and consultant no as trying to effect lifestyle changes. One of my greatest fears in starting the meds is I’ll be on it for 30 plus years (assuming I live to 80) and my wife is 38 and I will lose all my sexual interest along the lines of what you’re experiencing. It must be awful - I’d go back to the doctors and say you’re not happy and try another med. I’d be interested to know exactly what urological issues you’re having and what your PSA number/test result is if you’ve had a blood test. I’m assuming your prostate is fine save for being enlarged as you’ve pointed out. Take care, be well and best wishes to you.

I took Tamsulosin for longer. Couldn't see any benefit but it had detrimental effect on my sex life including ejaculated problems. Stopped taking it and problems solved.

What strength of Ed medication do you take

I hear you completely. Same age (52) same issues with ED and BPH. I also have very low testosterone levels, use Testogel for that. Cialis + Testogel have been like miracle medicine. No other health issues.

The BPH got worse, did two dilatation procedures, did nothing. Tried 2 different medications, neither worked for me… splitting headaches.

Would not do TURP or other procedures given side effects such as erection issued. Just did Urolift in London performed by Neil Barber at the London Clinic. Google urolift. 2 weeks on, things are working well with no side effects. Urine flow appears better, only split steam on rare occasions now.

FYI I had to switch urologists as my former one did not do urolift and wanted to do TURP…

Keep on it, if you can get to London, go see Neil Barber!

I’ve been on Tamsulosin for over a year now and find it almost non effective. I have great difficulty ejaculating when I masterbate and have very poor urine flow. When I did start taking it it was effective and my sex life was fine but just lately so frustrating. I express such a small amount of semen it’s so disappointing after a good wanking session.

Why are you still taking it if it is causing you all these awful problems?

I’m worried I won’t be able to urinate at all and my problems will get worse!

Fair enough. But maybe a chat with your doctor (if at all possible!) may help?

yeah maybe, but I tend not to have much confidence in GPs these days about that area.

My doctor has since moved me from tamsulosin to finasteride, after a week my urine flow seems no better, & my ED is still really bad, my sildenafil seems ineffective. My slow flow though inconvenient & embarrassing in my lengthy visits to public urinals may be worth putting up with, in favour of the increased success of the ED meds and and no conflicting meds effecting my sex life.

I am due a review in the next few days, prepared to give it a bit more time

For an an enlarged prostate, Finasteride can take upwards of 6 months to take full effect, so please don't expect to see any immediate improvement, or give up on it too quickly. I assume you're taking 5mg daily? Be aware that it works in a very different way to Tamsulosin.

Good luck - and I hope you get success with the ED medications.

Try taking the sildenafil on its own before you eat anything. Wait about 20mins then eat breakfast. After breakfast take the tamosulin. About an hour on from taking sildenafil you should be good to go.
