Hi guys, I had my circumcision yesterday, the letter the NHS gave me was very vague and I’ve spent a while reading guidance from various different hospitals in various countries, all seems to contradict each other. When I piss it come out like a watering can, I know this is caused by swelling. My issue is that it is drenching my dressing. Literally just the tip of my glans and then my urethra opening are showing. My dressing looks like be a gauze that is strapped up with the pinkish plaster tape. A lot of what I have read says keep the dressing on for 48 hours and then remove in warm water, but also says if it gets wet with urine then take it off straight away. I feel like I should take it off but am also worried as I don’t have any other dressings to put over it. Did anyone else have this problem?

Hello mate I’m on day 8 , I left my bandage and everything on for 48 then had a bath and took it off it came of so easy and no pain at all then I wore a dressing gown up until now and gave it a good bath every day , a tip aswell when you feel confident get some tight pants yfronts and that will help loads

Can you get someone to go to a pharmacy and get a suitable replacement dressing?

Yes I live near the pharmacy so will go and get some supplies. I will speak to the pharmacist and see what they suggest

Hello Brother,I am on day 11. I removed my bandage on day 2. It was very painful to remove it as some part of bandage started built in the wound. Keep your wound clean and wash it twice a day with warm salt water.

if you you think there is slightest infection, ask antibiotics from you Doc. Don’t just wait at the last minute. Keep the incision bandaged to protect from pulling by pants or underwear . You will be fine.

I suggest you to buy some new gauzes first and then you can remove the original one. Have a shower and re-bandage. It is suggested to use a gauze until the wound is healed and there is no discharge anymore. Strips of paraffin gauze or petroleum jelly to first layer prevents normal gauze stick in to wound. There are non-adherent gauze pads available, but they are bit pricey to change every day.

I find these are quite useful on wound care: paraffin gauze 'Jelonet' or similar, normal roller gauze, self-adherent gauze 'Coban' , surgical skin tape 'Micropore' and medical honey ointment 'L-mesitran' or similar. I almost forgot: Non-woven gauze pads for cleaning.

Thank you for the in depth reply. I am going to the pharmacy in a minute and will try and get the products you suggested. I’m assuming that the gauze is cut to size and covers the wound and it taped in place with the coban. Bit frustrated that I wasn’t told any of this at the hospital, they just said when it falls off then leave it off but that seems like a recipe for disaster!

Yep. I really don't understand the mentality of adult circumcision wound care there. Adult penis is different than infant one. Incision site needs to support against stretching by nocturnal erections similar way than wound on any joint area.

You can cut the paraffin gauze to get fit size with scissors. I bought couple of 10x10 cm sheets first. Around 4 cm width roller gauze fits to cover normal size penis and the incision site.

Even though the 'Coban' by 3M is quite quality self-adherent gauze, but it won't stay on penis shaft without using surgical tape near the pubic area, IMO. That's why I used a normal gauze on secondary layer and only couple of layers 'Coban' on third layer. You can re-use 'Coban' for couple of times if there is no discharge in it.
