Can you get a 2nd circumcision? I had my circumcision on Tuesday via the NHS and I think it’s a low cut somewhere between loose/tight cut. My penis was diagnosed with Lichen Sclerosus, although it appeared healthy I was getting extreme tightening of the foreskin especially after sex and masturbation, it was diagnosed following a biopsy. Tried various steroid creams and alternatives prior to finally deciding I couldn’t put up with having uncomfortable sex.
When I went to the pre-op the Dr told me as I was overweight I probably wouldn’t be happy with my penis appearance after the surgery and if I don’t lose weight I may find the skin will continue to appear to envelope my glans penis. Well it’s 3 days after surgery and I’m already regretting it as it the swelling and cut look like they will envelope my gland penis. However, I didn’t realise until the night before my surgery that there were different cuts - looking i see that either of the high cuts would have resulted in a more satisfactory appearance - would I be able to pay privately to have a second cut? Or am I now stuck with the cut the NHS delivered.
As an aside, if anyone is considering having a circumcision please research the cut types and try and discuss this with your Dr/Surgeon well in advance of surgery. My main chat about the surgery was with a female nurse at the pre-op, it isn’t her fault but her only knowledge about circumcision was that here younger brothers had them when they were younger (due to her families faith/culture). In hindsight, absolutely not the preparation that was required. On the day of my surgery the Dr. who did the surgery spoke to me for around 8-10 mins where I had to fire questions out, not ideal. He came to me as I was about to be anaesthetised to show me pictures of what he would be trying to achieve.
Showed me the screenshot attached and said he would aim somewhere between the two low cuts. He hadn’t seen my penis at this point. Madness in hindsight.

Were I you, I would just be glad I had got rid of LS. The NHS has done you a favour at no financial cost to yourself. In any case, you cannot really tell what your penis will definitely look like at this stage because of the swelling.
I’m glad that I’ve had the circumcision and I hope that it has got rid of LS, no guarantee though as the Dr. has made clear to me.
I think there’s a lot of room for improvement in regards to the pre-op process and explaining what can/will/might happen. Maybe a difference in opinion but I don’t see the NHS as a ‘free’ service. Being passed around between 4-5 different doctors and nurses from start to finish over the last 6-9 months and ending up with a doctor doing the surgery who hasn’t even seen the penis they’re operating on until the patient is about to go under the knife is a ridiculous situation.
Fingers crossed the swelling goes and my penis looks somewhat normal afterwards.
I’m not happy with the pre-op phase. I’m sure everyone knows what they’re doing but certainly room for improvement. When I read stories about this procedure impacting people’s mental health afterwards I think a surgeon taking the time to explain the probable outcome of the surgery and why they’re choosing the type of cut that they do (and other options) would be invaluable and allow any patient to be informed. The NHS is not above criticism, I do not blame any individual medical staff at all.
I have got in 3 months of awaiting more than 3 letters for blood tests. They made me go 3 TIMES to give my blood, on each letter it was written "you have been given a date for the operation" but once I showed up, they told me for 2 times "we don't have a date"
Then the surgeon cancelled my operation due to more serious cases, I respect that but for 3 months I couldn't plan my life at ALL!
At the end of the day this is what we get for doing it for free!
No, you’ve posted a rant about NHS and then a second post expanding on it. You haven’t offered useful advice based on the benefit of your own experience which is what this forum’s really about.
You can get a second cut but typically have to wait at least 6 months. The first month or so there will be a lot of swelling so try not to stress too much. The first week is definitely the worst and your fully healed penis will not look like it does right now.
When you have LS typically the doc needs to remove all of the LS infected skin so I’m sure he didn’t leave much excess skin. You don’t want it too tight anyway.
Don’t worry man like I said the first week is the worst and things will improve, but it will not look pretty for a little bit.
My story is similar. I had my surgery on the NHS in August 2019 due to LS. No discussion about cut/style, the surgeon I discussed the surgery at clinic was not the one I had on the day. Mine is low and tight, so further surgery isn't an option as no inner foreskin left.
There will be alot of swelling, it will take the time!
Remember - the main objective of having the circumcision was having LS.
Now, at least you'll be pain free.
I'm 6 months down the line and I feel much happier as there is no signs of LS!
Give yourself some time to heal before considering any further surgery.
Please only post pics if they are necessary. People have updated without doing so. If you have a penis health problem in a few months time, a pic might be appropriate for any further support you need.
I had a circumcision Wednesday on the NHS. The doctor popped his head over the top of the screening just before he operated and said he would do the cut high because I had a ‘fat pouch’ and if he cut it low, I would probably experience problems maintaining erections. I just told him to crack on and do what he had to do. These people are experts, they go to medical school for 7 years and gain multiple more years experience doing this type of op, you’ve just got to trust that these people know what they’re doing. I’m day 3 now, I’m bruised and swollen to holy heaven but some guy just applied clamps and cut around probably the most delicate area of skin on your entire body.
Let the swelling go down and the healing take its course, very early days at the moment, I’m not expecting my penis to look how it looks today at the end result. I think it’s going to look completely different and I’ll be satisfied with the results. Anything has got to be better than being in severe pain when you have sex?
Chill out is my advice. Take each day as it comes and if you start experiencing a sign of infection( get yourself to the doctors.
Appreciate your experience and outlook. I’m not criticising any of the medical staff at all and I’m sure this is a routine procedure for them.
Not sure why an inexperienced female member of staff with no experience of the procedure itself was tasked with my pre-op Q&A which lead to me finding this site and investigating for myself online creating more questions. The plethora of information and experiences online versus my actual experience with the NHS just leads me to believe that more could be done in the build up to the operation.
I don’t think you’re unduly critiquing anything or anybody. It all boils down to fear, you’re fearful at this moment in time of the outcome. But why fear the outcome until you know the outcome for sure?
Dr Google isnt a friend, he’s an enemy to your state of mind, building things up in your mind. I’m guilty of it myself, built myself up expecting to feel a load of pain and I’ve had completely the opposite experience.
The nurse is there to take some vital observations, they aren’t experts, soon as you whipped your trousers down that surgeon will have known what he was dealing with. As I say, mine popped his head over the barrier and let me know what he was going to do and the reasoning behind why he was going to do it. A ‘fat pouch’ that if cut low, would cause me erectile problems. I’m not overweight either. That’s a whole load of experience for him to get to that conclusion within 2 minutes of seeing my penis.
You’re hyping it up in your mind at the moment when everything is severely sore, bruised and swollen. I was this way just yesterday but come to realise I can’t fear what I don’t know. I’ll fear it when I arrive there.
Firstly your surgeon, staff and UK taxpayers have fixed your problem so you shouldn’t criticise The NHS for helping you.
You actually had more discussion with staff about your procedure on the day than I did. However you omitted to include the fact that you would have seen your family GP who would have referred you for a consultation with your Urologist/surgeon prior to operation day and both would’ve advised you on what to expect and answered any question/concerns. It was also within your gift to research this in advance, just as you’ve managed to find this site and source of information now.
Adult circumcisions done for medical reasons are usually done to remove tight foreskins. It’s therefore logical that the tight part of the foreskin gets removed and that determines where the cut will be. Advising others to choose styles from a menu isn’t helpful to those suffering from phimosis and wondering what to expect. I actually think that’s bad advice, sorry. Such choices are only available to those electing and paying to be circumcised for non-medical reasons at specialist centres.
I’ve not heard of anyone having a ‘high cut’ following a ‘low cut’ (although I have heard anecdotes of those doing the reverse) and can’t see the benefit. You’d end up with two scars surely? You probably need to explain what you mean by ‘satisfactory appearance’ - is the cosmetic outcome the real issue here?
You’ve said your doctor has implied you should lose weight to improve the cosmetic effect and lessen the likelihood of your glans penis becoming covered again. That again is your responsibility and under your control. Meanwhile, it’s only three days and you’re still swollen so may be best to recover first before making decisions.
I’m a UK tax payer myself and I’ve comfortably paid enough into the system to say I’ve paid my share. The NHS is not above criticism.
I have not criticised or named any individual staff. My gripe is with the pre-op build up. It’s all well and good me doing my own research online, however I’m not a medical expert. The nurse who had little to no experience being put forward for Q&A just sowed seeds of doubt inevitably leading to me doing my own research.
You’re right I did see GP probably 12-15 months ago to start this process, they got me into a urologist who at first asked me to try several different creams whilst they awaited giving me a biopsy. Once the results of biopsy were in and LS was diagnosed (and creams were not having the desired effect) I was put forward for the procedure. I wasn’t expecting a choice from a menu but having never given circumcision much thought in life didn’t know there were so many different cuts/outcomes. If I had never done my own research at no point would any doctor/specialist or nurse have told me what to expect.
The doctor who performed the surgery even said on the day it’s not very often they get asked many questions about the procedure or the cut type. Maybe sometimes too much information (from Internet) can be a burden, at least in my case.
Yes, I’m overweight. My choice to be in this position and I certainly wouldn’t blame any doctor if I my glans penis became enveloped in my remaining foreskin as consequence of my choice not to lose weight.
Hi Man, it's far too early to judge what result you will have. Usually they will do a low and tight cut when you have LS as it is important to have the glans exposed all of the time to get rid of the condition. I suspect you have some swelling now and if you have excess weight you may need to lose some.
In theory, you can have as many circumcisions/revisions as you have money for.
Due to the LS you had to have a very low cut to remove all of the inner foreskin.
If you are a grower, you had a loose circumcision to leave skin for the growth.
If you grow a lot than the looser the cut. If they take too much foreskin off you will end up with what is called a burried penis. As the doctor already told you your extra weight will complicate the results and you may not look circumcised while in the flaccid state.
My suggestion to you would be to wait and see what things look like after healing.
Then you can try to lose some weight if you can to improve the looks.
Sorry to break it to you man: you can absolutely get circumcised again but you can’t go higher, only lower. Just like a haircut; once it’s chopped, you can’t put the hair back on but you can go shorter til it’s gone
