My first 10 mile run was on 9th October 2019. I was pleased to achieve it but happy to return to regular 5 & 10ks - marathon (or even HM) distance is not for me! However it wasn't long afterwards that I had my first injury (torn hamstring), which stopped me running for about 4 weeks.π’ That was followed in April by arthritis in a toe and related swelling of my foot. Then at the end of July I had an issue with my piriformis which, although only painful when sitting, led me to reduce the distance I was running while having some physio treatment. So it has been a bit of a year for injuries - although I should say that in between the above I have enjoyed my running.π
With the piriformis issue now resolved, I have continued to do one 10k and 2 x 5ks per week, but have changed my 10k route for something less hilly. I've also finally realised that slower running can be a good thing! Those made me think about having another go at 10 miles, so over the last couple of weeks I've increased my 10k to 12 and then 14. I had a painful back at the beginning of the week, but this morning all seemed fine and the weather was perfect!π
So off I went at 8.30, down to and round my 'home' parkrun course at Portsmouth Lakeside - today inhabited only by a few anglers.π’ From there I ran southward along the foreshore, complete with new sea defences - not many places in Portsmouth don't have a sea view! Turning round, I retraced my steps, doing a couple of loops round local roads to add up to the right distance. My first 10 miles had been 16.11km, so I did 16.16 just to make sure this was my longest ever run! My time (1.49.43) was as planned a bit slower than my first, with a pace of 6.47 mins/km, plus every k under 7.00.π
Finally, this Sunday would have been this year's Great South Run in Portsmouth. As yet I've resisted taking part in a race during my running life, but I had toyed with the idea of entering - before you know what. So today could also be my virtual GSR!
Happy running one and all !

That is brilliant after all your injuries Jonathan. 10 miles is a very long way and I havenβt done it since the Great South Run last year. Your slow seems very fast to me.
It is my intention to enter again next year. You can join me .........
I am doing 10k on Sunday so will wear last yearβs shirt in sympathy of the cancellation.
Sorry about your recent injuries but congratulations on completing your second 10 miles run in a very good time of 1.49.43, a sub two hours 10 miles run is a great achievement for newer runners, my first and so far only 10 miles run was a little over two hours,
It's nice to know that you also run on the same course in Portsmouth as our friend Dexy5, perhaps you have met her, I just hope that all your injury problems are over.
Yes, I know Dexy and the rest of the Southsea parkrun crew very well - we have run together on many occasions. We are really lucky to have 2 parkruns in Portsmouth - one along Southsea prom and mine in the north of the city.
Yay Jonathan, well done! πππππππ That run was a massive deal after the injuries, lockdown etc. I bet youβre super pleased with yourself! HM next surely? Now that youβve discovered slow running (although Iβm not sure you and I are in the same page on that front!), youβll do it no problem. π
I canβt believe the GSR was a whole year ago. I enjoyed that race and would love to do it again! π
Brilliant. Itβs hard to come back from injury. Well done on your 2nd 10 miles. I said I couldnβt do a HM but managed it this week. You never know ......
What is all this talk about HM??? You have just run a great 10 miles after an awful injury blighted year. Today, and for the rest of the week just celebrate ππ₯π₯π!! You are always so supportive of the rest us, it is great to see you back in form. Beware of mystic cheekyβs magic spells π§ββοΈ though. I set out to do a 10/12k one day and came out of a trance with my watch showing a HM......sneaky cheekychipmunks π
Brilliant! Congratulations on a really great run. Youβve been challenged quite a bit on the injury front and the lockdown and pushed through it all. HM sounds like it may still be on the table, perhaps next year πππ
Sounds like you enjoyed it too...I imagine after all the injuries you've had holding you back you can really appreciate being able to reach your full potential once again, congrats ππ
