Finally broke the 10K mark on my long run this morning! (+ blister nightmare)

Warning, long post! So today, I ran the furthest I have ever run in my entire life - 11.2K (or 7 miles)! And what a run it was! It was dark and so windy with light rain (I almost lost my hat and headphones a few times), I was already feeling sore from Thursday's strength training class and I had never run the distance before! So I was feeling a bit apprehensive. It was a mentally challenging run I found and it was hard to focus my mind from time to time but I eventually got into my groove. I got a stitch when I was running halfway down a really steep hill (my knees were not happy about it either!) too! Even though it was a mentally tough run, especially towards the end, I have learnt a lot on this run about keeping a strong mindset even though you are finding it difficult. Anyway, I ran just over half of the half-marathon distance so that has given me a huge boost of confidence too!

I ran the run using a guided audio run on the Nike Run App/Club thing to power me through (wow that's a lot of the word 'run' in one sentence hahaha) which really helped me! But the audio coach wanted me to up my pace for 2 miles in the middle of the run and slow down for the last 3 miles, so I did even though it felt a bit uncomfortable and I may have pushed myself a bit too far. I slowed down when the coach told me to and it was like all the energy had been sucked out of me. I was more shuffling than running and every step took a lot of effort. What made it worse was the very end of my run was a slow incline up a lot of mini-hills too! So I think I won't push myself quite as much on the faster section of the run next time! I think I might have accidentally done a tempo run during that part of the run, oops!

But the worst bit of the run was blisters! I was about 3K in to my 11.2K run and and I noticed a niggling rub in my left little toe. It came and went but it was a bit uncomfortable and then gradually got worse. Then, when I have 1.5K left to go, the pain in my little toe suddenly rocketed making it quite difficult to run using my normal gait and every step was painful. But stubborn-old me, kept on running (already spent and tired from not pacing myself correctly!) despite the pain and I even upped my pace for the last few hundred metres! I got through that last bit by repeating my mantra 'Greater things are yet to come' over and over again and giving myself a little pep talk! I was so glad when I had finished the run! I had to loosen the laces of my running shoes, I was in so much pain and then I hobbled and limped home on tired legs.

When I got home, I found that my previously bleeding toe had again been bleeding (through the plaster that I had put on that morning to prevent that from happening in the first place, so that still makes no sense!) and next to it, the side of my little toe had the remains of a blister, just raw skin. I'm not saying that my blister de-railed my run, but it is crazy how something so small can really effect your run/race!

The running socks I was wearing are a bit thick and definitely limits the space my toes have in my shoes, so I think I am going to where thinner socks, tape my problem toes on my next long run and go from there and see if that makes any difference. I need to get this sorted for before race day that's for sure and I'm really glad this happened in training and not race day itself!

I also had a sports massage today which felt great for my tired and achy legs! However, I do not recommend doing a 7 mile long run at 5:30AM on 4 and a half hours sleep. As soon as I sat down after finishing my run, I felt my body really needing to sleep and rest but I had to go to church and then straight to the massage session. I got home from my busy day feeling a bit weepy and anxious for no reason at all and I recognized them immediately as tell-tale signs that I was over-tired. So I took a nap and I now feel much better! It's tricky navigating early morning runs and a part-time concert job where the shift finish time is usually around 11:30PM/midnight! It's gotta be done though!

I've got a next milestone run coming up next Friday, my 10 mile long training run! Looking forward to it (again it will be the furthest I have ever run so a bit apprehensive too!) and it's going to be my dress rehearsal run so I can check if all my kit is okay, practice my fueling and hydration strategy, run at 11AM so I can mimic race day and all that jazz! Can't believe the Bath Half is exactly 3 weeks away! :-D

Well done on your run - rest up well and good luck with your 10 miler! Bath Half is a fab event - I did it a few years ago. Good luck.🙂

Ugh! Blisters!!! I'd send you a photo of my feet to prove my credibility here, but it's not something you want to see. Just believe me when I say I know just how distracting that burning pain is🤬 I know just how hard the walk after the run is (now you know why I added 'comfy shoes' to the checklist! - flip flops for me, regardless of weather)🤬.

My blisters are in a different place to yours - on the inside edge of the widest part of my feet. I've tried all sorts of different shoes to no avail. I now run with a compeed plaster on each foot with a layer of KT tape over the top (I was using leukotape, but I find the flexibility and stretchiness of the KT tape makes it easier to apply and comfier to wear. I also wear twin skin socks. How I still manage to rub blisters is beyond me (there is no chance of anything moving against the skin) - but I do. I feel the burn from about 12k on a good run (possibly 8k onwards on a bad one). It's horrible, but I'm kind of resigned to it now. A little toe will be hard to tape, but you may find something stretchy like KT tape will work. You could also try twinskin socks (Runderwear are very thick, Hilly are thinner and I'm sure there are other options too. If the blister is between toes, you may find Ininji socks help (they're the ones that are like gloves for feet).

The other thing I would say is that you're building distance here - in pretty big jumps. Speed should not be coming into it. These should be long, slow, easy runs. You're building endurance, time on your feet and not speed. So when you tackle that 10 mile run, please do keep that in mind.

The sports massage sounds very well timed, nice 😍

Huge well done on such a long run despite the weather, hills and lack of sleep.

Oh, and sorry for such a long reply!!!

Sorry for the late reply, I've had a mad few days and wanted to sit down and reply properly!

Yeah blisters are a nightmare! I've been running in much thinner socks which has helped, I feel like my feet have more room compared to my thicker running socks! I've put on a compeed plaster on the raw skin and then taped it up with simple microporous dressing tape and I've also taped up the toe next to it too because that's the one that keeps on bleeding. I've worked out why that toe keeps on bleeding by the way - the cut on the side of my toe is actually a small verruca so it keeps on rubbing and then eventually bleeding! So hopefully that tape will prevent any problems on long runs!

Yes, I agree with you about long slow easy runs, I definitely shouldn't have even thought about speed! Even if Coach Bennett from the Nike Run Club App tells me to speed up on my 10 mile long run, I am not going to because as you say, I am building distance in very big jumps anyway and need to exersize caution! Will go slow and steady tomorrow and I might even walk some of it!

Don't worry about the long reply, I quite like it actually! :-)

Well done on your run but boo to the toe again! That must be so painful. Are you following a plan? That’s a big jump from 11K to 16K in one go. We don’t want you crocked before Bath so take it easy and as linda9389 suggests, slow and easy 🏃‍♀️🙂

Thanks! If you read my reply to Linda's comment you'll see what's been going on with my toe but I think I have solved it!

Yes, they are very big jumps in distance but it's just because I have lost 5 weeks of training because of stomach issues and I want to get to 10 miles before the race. But I will take it slow and steady on my long run tomorrow, even walk bits of it if I have to! :-)

Excellent! Well done you 💪😃👍🏃‍♀️

I use the Nike coach I love coach Bennett to death 🥰. He reminds me of Woody Allen 😁

I get blisters all the darned time I thinks it’s my feet as I have the right shoes, socks, blah blah. I came home with a belter the other day after a short run 🙄.

Keep running with Coach Bennett as his tips are ace 👍

I love Coach Bennett too, he is brilliant! He always comes up with really cool inspiration quotes that really gets me thinking on my runs which is great. He said a great one on my 5K run this morning - 'Struggling is not failure, it is successfully not giving up' (or something along those lines) which is so true when you actually think about it! :-D
