I'm wondering now if my high iron intake to ensure a lack of the mineral is in no way causing or exacerbating the restless leg syndrome I suffer from has not suppressed my zinc level allowing CNV/MD to develop. I think I upped my iron intake not so long before my first visit to the eye emergency department. However, I do take the iron as a bisglycinate and supplement with 45mg of zinc.

I note the PreserVision products contain quite high levels of vitamin E. In all probability it's going to be mostly alpha and beta tocopheral rather than gamma. You may wish to read this article and the many, many like it:

Hi, Thom. I too was recommended Preservision, by Moorfields, but had heard about the side effects of too much zinc. Instead, I take Macushield Gold, which is the same formula but with markedly less zinc. Too early to say whether it is having a positive effect but it feels good to be doing something. Good luck!

I am talking about preservision areas 2 and I was told by an eye dr (not my normal eye dr) that he just attended a seminar where they r saying taking this can actually do more harm than good because of the zinc content I am scheduled to go to my retinal dr Friday and will def b asking that question

I think the message is that if you already take medication which includes a zinc content, to check with your GP before adding to it.

There is a genetic test that shows if you have the gene for accelerated dry to wet AMD due to zinc. Over a year ago I did 23&me DNA testing. It showed I had a propensity toward AMD which I do have to my left eye. It does not have available further delineation if sensitive to zinc for the acceleration. I was taking AREDS2 PreserVision but quit taking. My retinal specialist was of no help in my decision. I am not sure if this genetic test is covered by insurance (I reside in the U.S.).

I was told that the AREDS 2 study showed a lower amount of zinc (25mg) is just as effective as 80mg (in Preservision), but with less side effects. It's one of the reasons why I take Vision Defender AMD AREDS2 vitamins, which has 25mg zinc.

So vision defender areas 2 is another eye vitamin with less zinc then I take it? I will ask my retinal specialifriday what he thinks and let everyone know as well thanks for your help

Yes, Vision Defender AMD has less zinc than Preservision, but the lesser amount of zinc is still proven to be as effective. I think zinc is still needed (that's why it's part of the AREDS2 formula). Will be interested to know what your retinal doctor says!

Here is an update about preservision areas 2 I went to my retinal specialist yesterday he told me there r always going to b studies and some r big studies some r small but he feels if u have macular degeneration preservision is the eye vitamin u should b taking I have macular edema as well as other things so he suggested I take 20 mg of lutein daily he doesn’t care if I take by itself or find it in macuguard so far I have only been able to find macuguard with astayantain with 10 mg lutein and I need 20 so just wanted everyone to know also as a side note I am now on a maintenance schedule of eyelea starting 4/27 and hopefully will b able to end up going from every 7 weeks between injections to 9 weeks or longer I have had 1 complete series of 3 eyelea in each eye with good success so that is very much prayers answered as I can’t have kenalog (too much steroid) until my iluvien implants dissolve (they never worked but I got 9/2016 so waiting for them to dissolve) thanks for listening
