Hi everyone, just a small rant. I have wet AMD, and had injections for two years, but then everything went stable, so for 17 months, no injections just check ups, in February I went for an eye test at the opticians, ordered new glasses, however, when I went to collect them they were not right, I made another appt for a re-check, in the mean-time, early march I went for my check at the hospital, early April was called in to see the consultant who said that the fluid is back, so more injections again. Now what I am quite miffed about, is that the optician did two scans before the test, and never saw this fluid, he told me everything was fine, in view of this, how can eye problems be caught early if the optician can't see it. It must have been very obvious because the April scan showed that it has got worse.

A little tiny rant

I got the impression from the leaflets I was given recently that things can change very quickly with AMD - not exactly what I wanted to hear - so maybe that’s what has happened with you. Very annoying anyway.
mmm, either it changed very quickly or else it’s time to think about changing your optician? Mine makes a point of commenting that macular is stable.
hi there sorry to read this. I think I am correct in saying that the scans that the opticians do are just fundus photography which is just a photo and it can be hard to check if there is an increase in fluid on those. At the hospital you would have had the same but also an OCT and on here it is much much easier to see if there is more fluid infact they even can compare how much more fluid than it had last time . The fundus photo is a bit like a very detailed photo of your arm and the OCT is like an xray of it of that helps so somethings can be spotted on the photo but the Xray is more obvious. Do look up Fundus and also OCT images . I hope The Macular Society can confirm this it will be the OVat that gives a more accurate picture which is not done at an Opticians.
OCT test at Specsavers cost me £10 but free for me at the hospital.
My optician does an OCT and fundus photography every time I have an eye test because I take hydroxychloroquine - the cost of an OCT is worth every penny whatever your optician charges and at £10 it’s a real bargain.
I’m only just starting with the hospital now because my optician saw a blip on my last OCT scan and referred me to the hospital.
My rheumatology dept don’t seem to refer their hydroxychloroquine patients for hospital eye tests as a matter of routine ☹️ however now I’m in with the hospital that’s me from now on although the hospital won’t do eye tests so I’ll still have to go to the optician for that which suits me fine because I do like a nice new pair of glasses.
Hello yes happened to me 4 years ago I woke up with blurred vision in one eye. I went Optician who said it was cataract and sent me to local hospital after getting appointment. They checked and said it was an eye stroke and re appointed. Eventually after 2 months I was given Eyelea injection and have had since. When I went back to Optician he done another xray and said he missed fluid leak and that hospital had informed him. He was of course apologetic and shocked he missed such a basic problem. I will never know if the 2 month delay caused any longlasting problems. I'm afraid it's down to human error, not good.
Whole AMD mess is very depressing. No one ever told me that it was incurable. Had to find out on google. btw I use inexpensive magnifyier glasses, (1.00 to 5.00) rather than Rx glasses.
