Eye drops and eye patches after injections

Hi,

I wondered if anyone had experiences of using eye drops after their injection? The eye clinic told me to buy some artificial tears but no guidance on when I can use them, how often etc.

Also can a sterile eye patch be worn after the injections. I have long haired cats and am also an unconscious face toucher. I don't want one on my eye constantly but when sleeping or being around my pets?

Probably really silly questions but as my appointment looms, all these unanswered ? are flooding my mind.

Some clinics give antibiotic drops to use after the injection, but most don't now. You would need to ask about the eye patch but aI think it's unlikely to be a good idea. If you have glasses, this might discourage you from touching your eyes a bit, and keep the fur away (you won't be able to wear contacts until the injection site is fully recovered) but I never had a problem with my cats, if you have artificial tears you can use a few drops to wash out any irritants

The anti biotic are only given now if the person has had a reaction to iodine in the past

I think that might vary, different clinics have slightly different protocols. I’ve always had them and Ism fine with iodine,

Ah ok well research showed that they are not really needed and you can take too many anti biotic and become resident to them and thus she really needing them they don’t work so well.

I was surprised when they stopped them and this is what my Ophthalmology friends said which made sense

No drops given at my clinic afterwards. Instructions are to use eyes normally. Ibuprofen or acetaminophen for discomfort as needed. My Directions include: "Recommend using over-the-counter Genteal Gel to eye every hour while awake today to reduce discomfort. If the injection eye is painful, the patient can also use cool compresses." I find I take some ibuprofen when I get home, I used the Genteal Eye gel a few times and at bedtime. I would find any eye patch a bother. 👀👁️👁️

Here are some instructions given out at local retina clinic :

Please follow these instructions after eye injections:

Do not rub your eye after treatment

If an eye patch is used, remove it after 2-4 hours [🏴‍☠️ I want to say "arrgh!" and "shiver me timbers!" ☠️]

For relief of mild to moderate pain or irritation, an over-the-counter pain reliever (i.e. Tylenol) or cool compress/ice pack can be used

Artificial tears/lubricating drops can be used

You should not swim for 2 days

It is okay to shower and wash your face

The following symptoms are COMMON after successful eye injections for a day or so:

Blurry vision

Tearing

Mild floaters or bubbles in your vision

Mild to moderate pain or irritation

“Eyelash in the eye” sensation

Redness (sometimes this can cover the entire white part of the eye and last a few weeks)

Bloody tears for 1-2 days after treatment

Runny nose.

I have had injections for 7 years now. It's never "pleasant" but has become routine and very tolerable now.

Good Luck!🍀

Hi Britgirl80- I have been having Eylea injections for the past 7 years (about 70 in all). I have had very little trouble over the years. I am allergic to the iodine drops which they use before injections and always have up to 24 hours of irritation (annoying but quite bearable).

I cannot advise regarding patches but the clinic would advise you. As someone else has suggested perhaps spectacles would help to keep fur away.

Regarding eye drops - again the clinic will advise you when to use the eye drops. I am usually told not to use any until the following day. I am always reminded to use a completely new bottle after the injections - not one already in use. My clinic suggested that the following are the best you can get at present:

HYLO-FORTE lubricating eye drops in the 0.2% strength. You can also get this in 0.1 % but I find the stronger ones are better. I get mine on prescription but I understand there is a great deal of difference in different areas about what GPs will prescribe. This type can be bought in Boots and last quite well.

I do hope this helps and do not worry about the injections - it sounds much worse than the reality. Best Wishes

Another vote here for Hylo. I use Hylo Tear long lasting, bought from Amazon in lots of three (I have injections in both eyes). When I started at Moorfields they used to give me a bottle to use as much as I liked after the jab. Now I live in Edinburgh where they are not so generous (spendthrift!) so I buy it, making sure to start new bottles, one per eye, after each set of injections. Leftover drops I use on clean cotton pads to wipe round the eyes. I use drops every day night and morning and they are very refreshing. Good luck! It's all horrible but the alternative is much much worse.

I have also just remembered that at my Clinic if you ask they will supply you with tiny individual use phials of sterile water to wash over the eyeball if you have irritation. It is best after your injection/s to rest your eyes as best you can for the remainder of that day (not essential but helpful).

Good morning. At my clinic (in Cyprus) they prescribe antibiotic eyedrops for five days.

Nothing to cover the eye. Best wishes.

I am generally given a pack of 5 eye drops for after an injection for free they are to be used if your eye feels dry

I think an eye shield would be better as they don’t actually touch the eye and generally have little holes in for air flow.

Hi britgirl80I used to get eye drops given to me when I had injections in Birmingham city hospital but since moving to another trust these are no longer supplied due to cost I was told. I am given an eye shield to use until the next morning. I have dry eyes and use my drops as often as I need . I have eyeze on prescription. The clinic told me this was ok. I too had a reaction to iodine previously. Things are ok now.

All the very best to you

Hi . I use Hycosan eye drops all the time as I have dry eyes. After my injection I always start a fresh bottle. I have a large hairy dog so I wear safety glasses for a few days after my jab. Also stops me touching my eye.

I have gotten my Eylea shots from several different ophthalmologists over the years at 2 different clinics (in the US). One doctor said not to put any drops in my eyes for 24 hours. One said to put artificial tears in right away & every half hour as needed - but (oddly enough perhaps) not to take a shower for 24 hours. Some don't offer any advice on the subject. There seem to be no "hard and fast" rules.

Eye drops are sterile. Shower water is not!

my clinic give a pack of 5 eye gel drops after each visit. I do use Theoluz duo on a regular basis. Any drops post procedure must be from a new bottle. Good luck

Important to get eye drops containing Hypomellose. I get moisturising eye drops from Superdrug but most chemists will advise and use as and when you need to. (Some are told to take five hours after or every hour .. no you can take whenever!!). Wear sunglasses after injection to protect from glare of headlights, sunlight.

Good luck!

Theoloz Duo is a god eye drop, not cheap but effective. My clinic now gives a rather swish pack that contains a strip of eye drops and it contains all the important info (NHS) Good luck
