First Ozurdex implant

I had my very first Ozurdex implant today and it went really well.

The doctor who did it was very experienced and quick and I didn’t realise it had been done until I heard the click.

let’s hope it works well.

Yes if it works for my macular oedema it will last for 5 to 6 months instead of the monthly injection. Fingers crossed.

Thank you for your prayers

I must admit I was a bit nervous as I felt that the eye to have the implant is sensitive as I feel the needle on my Eylea injections. I did say to the nurses I felt nervous and they promised to give me plenty of numbing drops. I said the same to the doctor when she came in and she said she would be gentle.

She was so quick and efficient, she had obviously done a fair few implants and I was happily amazed that I hadn’t felt it. My feeling is that it is the amount of pressure they use when injecting and she was spot on. She told me to look to the left and down, said it would be in a second and click it had been done.

I did tell myself while I was waiting that I was a grown woman who had given birth twice so I should be okay!

thanks for letting me know your experience of the implant. Like you, I feel the eyelea injections even though they are much better now I have a Novocain injection as well as the drops and my female doc is just the best. Obviously the lighter touch is what makes a difference. Be interested to hear how you get on with the implant which I assume means a lot less injections. Well done and best wishes.

Thanks. Yes it should last between 5 and 6 months and I was having injections at 4 weekly intervals.

I put it on because I had read some posts on here about it , one that was fairly old but frightening. So I wanted to add mine to let people know that it can go very well.

Just hope it works, and I can’t even see it in my eye although I did when I sat up from having it implanted.

It seems we are in the hands of our injector and experience is a great thing

After numerous injections over several years, I was given an ozurdex implant in 2020 under sedation for macula oedema. Was told it should last 6 months. Amazingly, 4 years on and never had a second one. Each eye check after that, they found less and less fluid and have now been discharged from eye clinic after the problem started 8 years ago. I read on here of someone else who only needed 1 implant. Big downside though, I was told it could worsen my cataract and it has. With my complicated eye problem from a BRVO and high myopia, surgery for cataract can be very complicated. I would like to know of anyone else who has this problem. Sorry to gatecrash your post. I do hope you find much benefit from your implant.

They warned me that it could cause a cataract. This was a year ago and I told the consultant I already had cataracts. I had them operated on and was due to have the Ozurdex implant 2 weeks before the first op. Unfortunately I got there and there wasn’t anyone trained or even ozurdex in stock.

Had both cataracts done and when this was offered again I jumped at it.

My first cataract op (my bad eye) had problems as a piece of cataract went to the back of the eye so they couldn’t put the new lens in. This was sorted a week later when I had a vitrectomy and the new lens was put in.

Good luck to you and thanks

Had 3 implants now. I find it improves sight for first 3 months then goes poor (lose colour yellow and blur) then get another after 5/6 months. So I'm grateful for those 3 months. Much better than monthly Eyelea that did not really help much.

went for my eye pressure check up yesterday. An interesting appointment as my pressure had gone up to 31. I told the doctor that I had thick cornea and she then used a tool that tested how thick and the answer was very thick and that due to that she had to knock off 6 off the pressure test so really 25. She started me on drops. She showed me the scans before and after the implant and I could see a big improvement and was able to read more letters on the chart. So all good. I hope I will be offered more of them.
