I forgot to mention in the above post-the weight is due to STEROIDS- at least I hope it is- I have never been this big in my life-only when I was pregnant with my daughter, but at least then I did have a baby to show for it at the end!!
Putting on SOOO much weight!: I forgot to mention... - LUPUS UK
Putting on SOOO much weight!
Hi, I went on steroids for two years and my weight stayed the stable. I work in the fitness industry and teach 4 to 6 hours exercise a week so am very active. I eat normally. I am pretty sure the exercise kept my weight stable. If you can join a gym or do classes, nothing too vigorous, then this might help, I am pretty sure this helped me. Also keep an eye on your food quantities as the steroids can increase your appetite. After the treatment my condition went into remission so I was glad I went on them. Hope this helps..
I agree exersice is the key also are u eating enough?? I put on weight because I wasn't eating enough remember your body will sort far if it thinks u are starving it. I make sure I eat something every 2 to 3 hrs to keep my matablisim going and I can say it works.
I know bloody steroids I used to be a size 6-8 I am now a size 16 and have beentd I will be on steroids for life but at least I'm alive I very nearly wasn't as I was in intensive care on life support for 3 months wher I had 2 strokes a heart attack and kidney failure so I count my blessings every day that I am still here I was only 45 at the time I hate being a fatty but heyho xxx
Hi, in response to putting on weight with steroids. I joined slimming world in Jan. After many years of steroids I have piled on four stone. However due to overeating and not eating the right food, sometimes due to fatigue n pain I couldn't make healthy meals. However have found slimming world amazing. As all fruit, veg, lean meat, pasta etc are free foods which you can eat without hassle of weighing or worrying! Great for those of us constantly hungry. So far I have lost 18 lb. Slow but without hardly any exercising im happy with it so far. I feel better for knowing I am putting the right fuel in my body at last xxx
I couldnt agree more with lupie-nat ! I joined slimming world in jan after 2yrs on steroids and ballooning upto a size 18 - I have lost 1 stone 3 pounds in 9 weeks with little exercise! I am never hungry and believe all the fresh fruit and vege is a big help to my illness. Would reccommend that you try it too bam1993!
Since I came off steroids I have Lost 30lbs with Weightwatchers while still on 25mgs Methotrexate, 400 Plaquinil, 10 Amytrripiline etc. It takes longer but it can be done. I wish you well. Steroids are a pain but they can also save our lives so a sort of love/hate relationship!! The joys and challenges of lupus!!! Good luck to all xx
I have put on a stone already after losing 4 and a half last year so I have one serious love hate relationship with steroids! They also have moved fat from my legs to my stomach and face so I kind of look like a lemon on matchsticks..... Least I can walk now haha. Xxxx
Hi everyone, Yes I agree that steroids are a damn pain but hey they do a great job when needed. I took them for 6 years at the early stages of my Lupus and I did not put weight on. Tell you why. I did research into the side effects and one of the things steroids do is to shut off the message in our brain that says we are full, so what do we do ? we keep eating. I decided to make sure that 1. I ate more healthily. 2. eat little and often. 3. when I did still feel hungry I would nibble on veg/fruit bites or have a bowl of homemade veg soup. 4. I took up walk/running and dragged myself to the gym 3 times a week to combat the other big side effect bone thinning. I became so fit after a few years that I came off all medication and stayed off for 14 years. So be strong my lupie friends don`t let the wolf make you eat more than you know you need. It`s not easy but hey what is living with Lupus? Howlllllllllllllll x
lemonface the gym omg id love to go to the gym , how do you do that, i have sle/fibro/copd/emphazema i get tired thinking of the gym, well done you for being med free, the only time i was med free was the 12 years it took to diagnose :(x
Thank you to everyone with the good advice-will keep you posted on progress-I know I must be eating more, even though it does not feel like it-I've not weighed myself in ages-only when I go to the hosp-so will see how much I have put on 4th April-I am sure it is quite a bit as none of my jeans will go anywhere near me-have had to buy a larger size(just one pair-will keep washing and wearing) and am determined not to put anymore on-going to really moniter my intake of food!! I've not been feeling well enough to exercise-but my steroids have now been changed-and am feeling a lot more energetic/pain free-so will look into going swimming also. Again thanks to replies to all you luppies out there
My mother got put on steriods a few years ago and she piled the weight on too. She had always been tiny before going on them but she had to have them. She said they made her feel jangly and she was always hungry. On a more positive note when she stopped needing them and stopped taking them her weight resorted to normal. I hope this is of some comfort to you.
