I recently had blood tests for Lupus, specifically Antinuclear Antibodies, which came out negative, but I still have symptoms which resemble Lupus.
Is it possible to have negative ANA blood tests, yet still have Lupus?
Many thanks.

hi lupien
yes it almost normal for that to happen.
i have about 10+ postives and about 10+ negatives it means nothing
it just a help. the a.n.a will usually go up if inflamation is there.
even when i have had infamation it has at times come back
negative. if you have a good rheumy he will put all the pieces together xx
Hi lupien
Yes - I have been ANA negative for the last 9 years and have only just become ANA positive! I agree with nicky - you need a good rheumy to fit all the bits together. One of the best pieces of advice I was given was to keep a record/diary of all your symptoms and blood results etc to make a portfolio to take with you to show your rheumy. Take care xx
Dear Nicky and Rachy
It's Lupie 'n Proud!
Thank you for helping me with my question. I suppose I am a bit sad, because it means I can still have it and of the catalogue of diseases that human beings can have, I am not sure I would want this one.
I started making notes of all the weird manifestations of this disease - joint pain, fatigue, skin rashes, constipation despite eating non-stop broccolli and lentils, flare-ups that coincide with my periods - and must have been to see my GP countless times over the past 5 or 6 years with these complaints, telling them both my mother and her brother have type II and I diabetes respectively, and that I might have it. They did blood tests and they all came back negative yet I was increasingly feeling worse. Today I am in bed with a winter virus - headache, fever, chest infection - it's been like this since Friday and am very concerned, particularly on my ability to work in the future. I have to overcome this disease and not let it get the better of me.
You input is much appreciated thank you so much, I have a feeling we are all going to be in touch much more the in the future :/
xx
yes i was diagonised by a skin biopsy and not blood tests the only thing the blood test showed was my esr was very high my husband has type 11 diabetes but i havent but i feel sorry for the way that you feel at the moment im having a nasty flare up and my gp wont help so i wish you all the best try to keep your chin up and try to be positive
Thank you Serenigirl for your kind words and support. I wish GPs were more clued up about "The Great Imitator", aka SLE.
