I am hypersensitive to touch noise lights etc but my sense of smell is astounding, my friends call me a blood hound. Wanted to know if this was part and parcel or I'm just a weirdo. I have SLE, Sjorgens Fibromyalgia I'm currently taking plaquenil and gabapentin.

Hypersensitivity and heightened sense of smell
Hello LottaTee.
This is a new one on me, my sense of smell is rubbish, I put this partly down to Sjorgrens as my nose ( and eyes ) is always dry. Very usefull when cutting onions though.
I lost the sense entirely for 3 months, some years back after an op on my nose, The weird thing was that I remembered smells and would react to some things as if I could smell them!! I would flinch at cigarettes or othe offensive items, Even weirder was that I could sense water?? Streams ponds I knew where they were even without seeing or hearing them.
In your case if this is a new phenomenon, I would look toward the Gabapentin for an answer.
How interesting. Thanks. I can actually smell individual ingredients in a cooked meal. Can smell things I've eaten being released from my pores which is why I don't cook with fresh onions anymore. Just frozen. Don't ask why I can smell fresh and not frozen lol. The smell thing happened before the gabapentin so as much as I'd like to blame it I can't. Lol. Hmmm I will keep researching this.
lotta tee!i have had heightened sensitivity to everything ,my sense of smell is sensational ,i hear things others dont ,etc etc!its insane how super sensitive i am ,however im also sensitive to medicines, alcohol, sunshine, foods, also very sensitive in moods also ,like my whole system is on ultra red alert ,so annoying !these hyper senses are due to overstimulated immune systems,i even get tingling from using the computer!also sensitve to weather changes ,and barometric pressure, for me the only downside is i get exhausted really easy ,mentally and physically ,i try as much as possible to take time out from all the stimulants in life where possible ,this for me has been ever present in my life ,way before lupus,,fibromyalgia, sjogrens, was diagnosed, makes me wander how far back this autoimmune disorder began???i do beleive some of us are more predisposed to this than others though,i often wish there was a pill i could take that would dampen down these senses but without the side effects of certain medications,im seriously going to try meditation ,gotta be a way to dull our systems without extra meds?maybe were super human lol keep well your not alone on this one ,brave .
I always smell more things when I am hungry.
On the whole my sense of smell is average. I do have hyperacuisis and abnormally intense startle reflex, due to my neurological problems.
That's given me something 2 think about, my sense of smell is absolutely amazing. Pity the same can't be said 4 the rest of my body ;0)
