SLE and Anemia

I can't understand why my haemoglobin levels drop so quickly when there is an SLE flare. Can anyone give any tips on the maintenance of haemoglobin? I have had an iron infusion which has helped massively, but feel my levels have dropped. I have another blood test this week. Iron tablets are not the best for me.
