‘Tame The Beast’ ….. I’m sharing for anyone who’s never seen this & am interested in your thoughts ….. https://youtu.be/ikUzvSph7Z4

I was told about this a few days ago by the APP (Advanced Physio Practitioner) at my GP surgery, (It may well be already on Lupus UK somewhere). Yes, neuropathic pain was explained to me a long time ago plus I learned all about how pain is transmitted to the brain during Human Biology lessons approx 45 years ago; As a retired Paramedic & former Dental Nurse I am very interested & do understand the science. Another string to my bow is I am also fully qualified, experienced Person-Centred Counsellor/Psychotherapist who has had lots of different therapies myself, so I am familiar with it from both sides of the coin.

Having watched many of Lorimer Moseley’s videos, of which there are many on You-Tube, I am not a fan of his at all as not everyone is the same, what they can & cannot do in spite of their pain differs, their physical fitness & capabilities all vary and age is not always an indication of how well a person can or cannot function with ailments/disabilities/injury/disease/illness.

In one of his videos he mentions a patient having the knees of a 75 year old & an 80 year old in another …. He failed to acknowledge that some older folk can be fitter & healthier than some younger people!

This particular one, ‘Tame The Beast’ is one I especially dislike - I hate the graphics, the colours, the poor quality, the sound and the overall message it portrays. Others might disagree with me & find it beneficial & that’s OK - I am merely telling you my opinion.

Having many physical ailments, (serious back injury since childhood, 14 different neck/back problems, various surgeries, [including failed full thickness tear rotator cuff surgery], Sarcoma, spinal surgery & more, plus SLE Lupus), I have managed to have a strenuous, professional medical career, participated in competitive sports and dancing from childhood to late 20s, regularly did & still do keep fit, a variety of exercise, Physiotherapy, fitness & have practiced Yoga for 35 years.

It hurts if I do, it hurts if I don’t, so I might as well do! …..Unfortunately, fatigue & flares get in the way sometimes….☹️

Some of my ailments/disabilities/illnesses are REAL, ACTUAL mechanical problems which are excruciating at times but I have never used them as a ‘trophy’ nor shied away from keeping myself as fit, strong & healthy as possible, pushing hard with perseverance & determination to not be overweight, immobile, inflexible, physically weak or allow myself to become a ‘couch potato.’

I have had to learn to modify & adapt how I do things, sadly stop some pastimes, heartbreakingly had to downsize to a low maintenance bungalow, leaving behind my beloved, beautiful garden & reluctantly learn to pace myself better, say, “No” and rely on pain relief medications.

To me, Lorimer Moseley seems to assume that everyone avoids movement when they’re in pain & I find this deeply offensive as I know for a fact this to be untrue as even with 5 degenerative, intervertebral discs, (& other spinal problems), I can still bend in many directions, do the splits & stand on my head! ….I’d love to have a conversation with him, lol …….

My 62 year old husband has Rheumatoid Arthritis - his treatment includes Rituximab IV infusions, DMARDS & various pain meds. He still works (albeit part time & with the aid of supports on knees, ankles & wrists), swims, walks, cycles, goes to the gym, helps to maintain our home/DIY etc. …..He too would like a conversation with Lorimer Moseley about some of his statements & ideas regarding pain…..Eg, In his video, “Why Things Hurt,” Lorimer Moseley states,I want to try & convince you that pain is an illusion 100% of the time.”

I completely accept that some people may really like him, agree with all he says and find his talks/videos very helpful, I personally do not - he annoys me & winds me up!

He is also involved with ‘Reality of Health’ & ‘Pain Revolution’ both of which have websites for anyone who’s interested.

Thanks for reading my lengthy post & if by posting it I’ve helped anyone then that pleases me.

All the best to everyone 🤸🏻‍♀️….emoji of me doing a cartwheel which I can still do 🤫

Thanks for posting video 🙂 and your story . . I do get what he’s saying about pain is the bodies protective mechanism … but he doesn’t actually mention visual symptoms that cause pain . For example like swollen knees , bruises after exertion , burning feet etc . In one breath he’s saying pain is real and in another it’s like he’s not !!! I’ll have a look at some more of his stuff x

Hi Tiggywoos, I agree with you & having watched several of his videos, I noticed he does sometimes contradict himself.

There’s a short clip of him talking with David Butler who is his co-author on the books, ‘Explain Pain’ & ‘Explain Pain Handbook’ which they refer to as, “EP.” During their chat they do briefly mention osteoarthritis & rheumatoid arthritis but quickly go on to the content of their books.

They’ve devised something called ‘The Protectometer’ which uses DIMS & SIMS (Danger In Me & Safety In Me) plus the ‘Goldilocks Principle’ which is basically about pacing yourself.

On Amazon UK the main EP book costs £55 & the EP Handbook is £25, there are several reviews - some of which are bad. I won’t be buying any of them…..

I wonder what Lorimer Moseley & David Butler would make of my current awful Lupus flare which I’m battling without any Lupus meds?!? ….. Multiple, raging joint pain, (neck, shoulders, elbow, knees, ankle + fingers which feel like they’re in a vice). Adverse reactions to 3 different Lupus meds including Anaphylaxis with one, means I’m trying to manage it with standard pain medication & Ibuprofen gel…… I am awaiting a Rheumatology review.

Have a good day 🙂

Hi Turquoise, thanks for bringing this to my attention. Like you I’ve kept myself as fit as possible all my life with hard work, Scottish Country dancing, walking long distances, gardening, and in more recent years yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi. But due to my conditions I’ve had to give up swimming (due to recurring UTIs) and more recently dancing (due to hip bursitis followed by arthritic sacroiliac pain , and now because of this wretched arthritic shoulder I’ve had to even give up my other classes because they all involve stretching out your arms and doing floor exercises which I can’t do for the pain. I feel so frustrated and depressed by this enormous change in my lifestyle during the last 2 years.

So I also find it offensive that Lorimer Moseley seems to assume those of us in pain aren’t trying in any way to overcome it and are feeling sorry for ourselves. He is also assuming the pain is in the same place and of the same severity EVERY day. Sadly it isn’t as easy as he appears to be suggesting, not that I’ve listened to it more than once so might be mistaken.

Keep up the cartwheels! Thanks again for posting. Xx

Aww Spotty-ewe,

Your story & back problems are very similar to mine & I too feel enormously frustrated & depressed in my change of lifestyle especially over the last 18 months or so. We have put a lot of effort into keeping ourselves as fit as possible in order to apply ‘self help.’ I do wonder if I’d still be suffering as much whether I had or hadn’t exercised so much all these years.

I’ve had to start using floats to swim due to back, shoulder & knee troubles, don’t swim as rigorously & do more water walking & exercises in the pool than actual swimming ….. it takes a lot of effort, gets me down but the Hydrotherapy Pool thereafter is rather pleasant.

The things I once enjoyed are definitely getting more difficult….

I hear what you’re saying about one part of your body impacting your ability to do your regular exercises, in fact I’m just in the process of having scans/x-rays & seeing MSKC/APPs for exactly that. Trying to explain to them how difficult it is to do the very exercises which have helped to keep me mobile, strong & flexible all these years is painful in itself! Some of them are taken aback that I have actually enjoyed exercise and have done it because I like it.

Scottish Country Dancing must have been an enjoyable exercise, I loved my dancing days - I was in an Entertaining Troupe, (a cross between the Tiller Girls & Cheerleading), being the Leader, I was out front leading/instructing/directing + doing lots of acrobatics & gymnastics. Travelled around to competitions & carnivals every weekend March -September.

Some of my back problems stem from those days but they were fantastic times…..however, my latest MRI shows 14 different problems & it’s shot to pieces 😢.

Due to my declining health & hubby’s RA, we downsized 7 years ago, moved to a bungalow (which was my Dad’s who died 2 years ago). Being a gardener from a young age with gardening parents & grandparents, I had to leave behind my beautiful garden and create a low maintenance one (which is still very nice). We are considering moving into a retirement village as already everything is getting so difficult……

As for Lorimer Moseley, well I think you sum him up perfectly! x🤸🏻‍♀️x
