nightshade foods

Hi

I’ve read that if you have Lupus you shouldn’t eat nightshade foods such as tomatoes or peppers as they can cause inflammation, does anyone know if this is right?

You will find as many opinions as there are people expressing them! Some say that nightshades are pro-inflammaory and some say some are actually anti-inflammatory. Really it is up to you - identify what effect they have on YOU and exclude any that have a bad effect on YOU. If you just blanket leave out all nightshades then you take a lot of variety and colour which redeuces the good things you get from them.

I totally agree with PMRpro. It's very much an individual thing.vwhat is good for one isn't good for another. Just go with what your body tells you.

Tomatoes inflammatory? Really?🧐

Where’s the evidence?☝️👆

Which molecules are implicated?

Personally as a vegetarian I eat tomatoes and peppers daily without them causing issues for me. I think as others have said we are all different and triggered by different foods xx

I read that too at the start of my lupus journey. However I can tolerate the nightshades..tomatoes, peppers and potatoes. The only thing I absolutely avoid is alfalfa sprouts as I've read that these have actually caused lupus in monkeys. 💜🌈Xx

Agreed it’s individual. I got inflammation coming from a finger-joint and now swollen fingers when I eat tomatoes so avoid.

Like @CecilyParsley I'm a veggie and my entire diet consists of tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic and potatoes and I'm fine with these.

The only doubt I have regarding flaring is mushrooms. I've found on a few occasions I've flared a day or 2 after eating mushrooms.

Yes I have horrible reaction to some nightshades (tomatoes and peppers), to the extent I dare not go near any of them. But as everyone has said, we all have different things we react to. I'm fairly sure it does have something to do with gut health so improving that might help? But perhaps also mast cell reaction? I'd love to get some clarity on it.

what happens when you eat them, how do you react?

Reflux, mouth tingling/burning, joint pains (the latter comes with everything 🙄).
