My aunty has ordered a book about diets and noticed a page on foods that people with Lupus should avoid. I have tried googling some more information but I don't know what to trust. Anyone know anything about this?

When i was diagnosed 3 years ago my rheummy told me to follow a low fat 'mediterrian diet'. Eating plenty of fish and veg and avoid saturated fats and take away food as these foods aggrevate the disease? I have to admit i still enjoy a take away once a week and i do try to eat healthy but im prob not as strict as i should be! Thats intersting there is a page about foods to avoid theres def truth to this!

Yes. For two decades Jess. Have a look at the RA Diet - might help. Seem to recall it involves cutting out everything but white fish and carrots then adding other stuff gradually to see what causes a reaction. Also we lupies should avoid, apparently, the chemical "amine". It's in a lot of things from sprouting beans to hair dye and there are various links on Google to explore. The killer abstinence for me was cheese, chocolate, wine, mung beans and mushrooms (lol)! Gave them all up for a couple of years but didn't make any difference. However, this is what I learned: cheese is actually OK if low fat and you go for something with very little rennet; white and rose wine OK but not red; and *quantities* of chocolate a no-no - if you want to avoid migraines. My sisters also kinda bullied me into various other forms of dietary torture over the years to no avail. I've come to the conclusion that a little of what you fancy really does do you good so go with your urges. I think our bodies know best what they need. And sod giving up hair dye! x
Bought a book on amazon anti inflammatory meals...I still tweak it by cutting out dairy and eggs. Night shade plants are suppose to be inflammatory like tomatoes, eggplant....then you have to watch how many veggies u eat if you have that clotting factor, like broccoli, Brussels sprouts. But, apparently if you mix things up together they can work together as anti inflammatory. Complicated. One of the the soups had cumin, chili, tumeric...spicy stuff. Not easy to change your diet. Do the best you can. Just search online for an anti inflammatory meal if you need one. That's what I do.
I'm sorry but we've all got to die at some point, lupus makes life miserable enough at times, so why waste whatever time we have feeling more miserable by banning lots of foods? As long as you eat healthily for weight control purposes and to keep your arteries unclogged, and avoid anything that really causes a problem, for me it's wheat and gluten, I say everything in moderation.
I agree with you. I'm not sure how long I will be around. I had a grandfather die at 38. His wife lived until she was 96. All their kids died in their 50-67. There has been heart attack, cancer, stroke, motor neurone and old age as the causes. The heart attack at 38 was because of the effects of the gas in world war 1. So eat healthy, try to keep fit and cut out any known problematic foods but don't worry because life could be too short is how I feel
I have read that we should avoid garlic as it 'revs' up the already over active immune system.
I find this true, but do use it when have an infection and I find it helps as I can't take antibiotics. I don't take garlic daily like some recommend, though, because it is nature's antibiotic - best kept for emergencies!
Thought all the warnings re: 'saturated fat' had been debunked now? The big no no's now being peddled are sugar and trans fats.
Food fads change with the wind. Prime example is the rediculous no nos for feeding babies and that you're not allowed to give them food for a long time then only this or that.. Did food being given to us adults as babies harm us? No! Did we get harmed making mud pies and playing outside? No! The world's too sterile a place now and people following silly food fads or popping health and diet pills instead of eating a healthy, balanced diet across all food groups. There's where the harms being done to health.
We don't know if it harmed us or not - perhaps that is why we have lupus now!
My doctor went into everything before treating me including whether breast fed, vaccinations I had in my life and family health history. I was very lucky, most doctors don't know that our bodies remember everything - each cell records everything just like a computer! When it gets overloaded or unbalanced that is when the problems start.
My dad spent his life expecting to die early of a heart attack like his dad. They say your more at risk if your parent had problems early on in life. He died of MND at 67. Too many things can happen. I love food except turnip, not fussed on turnip, and I eat. I'm not saying not to take care if you think something is wrong for you but enjoy it
I really enjoy the food I eat - like I never have in my life before because I have found the food that is right for me!

You can be with the right help and self-determination - we all could be, but it is just finding it.
When I was about 3 days from death, I got on my knees and begged if there was a God out there to take me quickly because the pain was too much, but I would rather live and get well.
I bargained that if I was shown the way, in return I would do whatever was asked of me.
Things started happening after that - as if I was being guided.
My GP suggested a natural healer because conventional medicine would have killed me.
I took his advice and had an incredible experience. After that I started to find people that were able to help me - it was as if they came out of the woodwork. I have kept asking in meditations what work I can do in return, but the answer is always not until you are well, although I do find that I get moments when I find myself telling others things and they come back and say it has helped.
After this post and then the post re immunisation causing Lupus. I started searching for info. I eventually found myself on U tube watching a short lesson on SLE and how this man felt re immunisations and diet. I'm not sure now. I might even try his ideas re changing my diet for a month. I've just got to be more organised. I wish I could remember his name he really had a good argument. Not sure how scientific but it kind of made sense.
Knowledge is power and it is good to listen to others, but in the end, decide for yourself what is right for you.

It doesn't always have to be scientific to be helpful with us all being different.
Do what you can cope with, because changing to good food can sometimes be challenging for the body and make you feel tired to start with.
Also my doctor said rotating food is a good idea - not having the same foods every day. I find this helps me. I guess it keeps ahead of my over active immune system and lessens the chance of reaction.
Cann...OMG....same thing happened to me.. I prayed and found direction and answers for natural healing...some people don't want to hear it. It's a personal decision and can be scary. I also want to give back to the community and help in some way, but have not found that direction yet. Maybe taking care of my family is my direction right now. Good luck Cann!
I'm thinking rather than food it's your positive attitude and spiritual being and beliefs keeping you well. That does more than anything for a person. I see Lupus as a big butt, one that needs kicking with a big hobnail boot.
I agree and it does seem like that, but I suspect it is everything including food, because we are 'whole' people and not just clinical beings as doctors see us - they don't seem to connect one part of the body with another, although they are learning.
It is probably my spiritual being that requires me to eat the way I eat and behave the way I behave because we are who we are.
I believe in respecting others and the world, but also that I have a right to a life, too.
We can become disconnected from our bodies and spirit in this unnatural world and sometimes the body or spirit takes over and shocks us into either doing something about it or suffering, even dying, although we all die sometime - it is how we use the time here that is important.
I am a Libran, the scales, I need balance - even slight imbalance sends me off course.
There is so much to learn and it is all so interesting - certainly a learning journey whilst on this earth - and probably beyond.
I see Lupus as just one more imbalance in the body, a really big one where the body, mind and spirit has been subjected to/affected by so many imbalances in life and perhaps past lives, that each is bewildered/confused as to how to sort it all out/rebalance itself and get back on the course that it came here to do.

I am sure an interesting old goat and dragon, MandaM! We all have a uniqueness about us that when we can find it within ourselves, we start to feel that we have the support of good energies around us and can appreciate the beauty that life has to offer even in suffering and death; death is just a transition.
I know this from my experiences, but understand that others will need to experience it, too, in order to accept what I am saying.
This is interesting, but we have to remember that we are all different and cannot take the same foods anyway, but eating healthily has got to be the best way.
I was fortunate enough to be taught how to muscle test myself when seriously ill and I trust this implicitly.
There are certain foods I cannot eat, though healthy foods, such as tomatoes, potatoes and peppers because they cause joint pain for me.
Dairy foods give me asthma.
A Mediterranean diet is healthy, but they get fresh healthy fatty fish and it is not easy to get that here.
Much of the salmon is farmed in Scotland and fish farming is not healthy.
With autoimmune problems any organ or any part of the body can be affected and it is like a maze working it all out, but with muscle testing I manage to keep the symptoms to the minimum.
I don't believe there is a 'lupus' diet because food is medicine and once you know the way the food can help, then you need to work out if it is what your body needs.
This is my argument about drugs - it is trial and error and for some it works and for others it doesn't and the side-effects can then be horrendous. We all have to find out what is right for us - it is our responsibility.

You can learn it from a kinesiologist.
It has been used as a way of testing what the body can take for 1000's years in foreign countries - better than any of the tests doctors have given me.
It saved my life and I have a lot to thank the kinesiologist for, but she said that she can only help some people - those who really want to help themselves.
She tested all the foods and found I couldn't take any of them - I knew from my reactions that I couldn't, but it was good to have her verify it - she didn't make money out of me because I couldn't take supplements either and she was honest enough to tell me that my body didn't know what to do with supplements, so there was no point taking them.
I was given the wrong drugs in hospital with penicillin allergy and the wrong treatment and I have suffered the immune system problems ever since, but I am so much better now - 8 stone instead of 5 stone 10 at one point - everyone thought I was going to die even me, but my spirit obviously knew different!
I have used the extra time to tell others what I have learnt, but I have to be careful about advice because we are all different and we all need different things - I swear by muscle testing and doing it on the self because our bodies are subjected to different energies all the time and are changing all the time, so we cannot rely on a therapist to be there to test us - Mine said she needed to teach me to do it on myself and she spent a while finding out which was best for me - there are several and I use Hashimoto's muscle test. You get in touch with your subconscious and your autonomic nervous system and that is why the muscles react in the way they do and give you the information you need to act upon it.
Yes ditto, not heard of that either. We have such a nasty cocktail of toxic drugs in our bodies supposedly keeping lupus at bay, I agree. Doing the best you can by eating well and avoiding anything that upsets you is all we can do in an effort to be as well as lupus allows us to be. Unfortunately I can't exercise as Lupus has had my kidneys, (have a transplant) skin, eyes (lucky I still have eyes apparently!) AND is now doing something nasty to my heart and lungs, hopefully after a year and a half I might get a diagnosis there and more pills! Off to Greece Tuesday so luckily I get to eat that lovely, yummy Med diet for a week, that'll make me feel better for sure. :0D
Sorry I seem to be on my soap box now lol. If we believed everything we read then I died back in 2005, 5 years after my diagnosis because that's what I read online! I'm going to blame my little soap box rants on Lupus bad moods and meds inc cantankerous steroids ha ha. ;0p x

Learn to muscle test yourself and you certainly won't believe everything you read then, I can tell you, - you will question everything and be able to state your facts with conviction! I read on an email this week from my local lupus group secretary how a doctor stated, what I found out when I was very ill - the system likes to keep us suppressed and afraid - health is a good business - a fit patient is no good for business and a dead one isn't either - the profit lies somewhere in between!
You saying about a dead one being no good for business just reminded me of a time on a ward I worked on where a housekeeper served a recently deceased patient a tray of food! Some patients will do anything to avoid hospital food! I have a dry sense of humour so apologies to anyone that offends.
Because I've been in a flare since Christmas I followed the Lupus Recovery Diet for 3 1/2 months - no alcohol, gluten, dairy, eggs, fish or meat. I felt like crap, and thought that there was nothing left in life for me. So I gave it up, I still feel like crap but enjoy my tea now.
MargaretGail you've made me laugh, thank you. I decided looking like I'm about to drop twins a few minutes after eating anything wheaty wasn't a good look for an almost 50 year old with six grandchildren! Gave up the wheat, now I've lost two dress sizes. Like you still feel crap though. Right off for my cuppa :0)
