Good morning all !

First time posting on here …. But need some advice if poss .

Will attempt to post pic of my hand , but this is the 5 th time it has happened in exactly the same place .

I have no diagnosis , but have had positive ANA , and rheumatoid factor high .

I do have pernicious anaemia and folate deficiency and do feel poorly most of the time .

Oh sarahlou2 straight to the GPs or urgent care please!

That looks very painful ☹️

What has happened before when it goes like this?

Hard to see from the photo but is the main knuckle part of the rest of your hand swollen too? Does it feel like it’s coming from the joint (so a deeper bone pain)or more from the skin?

Sorry to hear you’re still in the diagnostic wilderness, and have so many symptoms. It happens to lots of people but getting this seen by the right people may be a piece of the missing jigsaw puzzle in getting you diagnosed.

So definitely make sure you show a doctor today. Can be hard getting help on the day at the moment but that definitely needs seeing today so insist and A&E if not.

I’m afraid I can’t help as to what it is or what is happening, lots of problems with skin and joints can occur in these diseases but I’ve never personally had anything like that and I’ve seen similar on other people but more at the tips of the fingers. I had hand sudden swelling recently and they x rayed me for septic arthritis but I’m not sure if that would come through the skin like that.

Sorry not much help except to say you need to get help today. Let us know how you get on xx

Thanks again x

Do you often get a temperature? Some get it with the lupus, I did a lot in the early days but it also could be a sign that your hand is infected?

Ah yes good idea with LFT - still the first consideration before anyone will actually still us for something completely unrelated!xx

Hi SarahLou2, always best to get unknown things checked. Can’t quite see by the picture apart from it looks angry and sore. Do you bruise easy? I get lots of bruises all over my body, they can appear just by brushing past the door to doing gardening. I always get a repetitive one on the back of my hand when using pruning. Not sure if it’s pressure or the handle pushing on the skin, recently the handle of the vacuum cleaner fell on my wrist and I had swelling and bruise ( looked similar to your hand) I also get to little lumps come up in the palm of my hand. I have spoken/ shown rheumatologist consultant who said it wasn’t anything to worry about 🤷‍♀️ I wonder if you have a weak tenden/ blood vessel in the area that erupts after using your hand?

I do bruise easily …. Always have , but have always put it down to Anaemia .I haven’t done anything out of the ordinary ….. my hands have been v painful for the last couple of days …. They always are !

Will get looked at …. And let you know outcome

Hi SarahLou. That looks awful. I have RA & when i’m on steroids i bruise easily. Are you on steroids? Thay also say if you bruise easily, it can be a sign you may have liver damage. Whatever it is. Defo get it seen too asap. I know you’re waiting for your GP to call. If they don’t, i know it’s a pain. (Literally). But i would try & go to a&e if i were you.I have serious eye conditions. I had to go to Moorfields a&e at 3am one night. Had to wait until 7.30 to see a Dr. Then wait to see a specialist until 9am. Didn’t get home until 10.30. I know it’s so annoying & frustrating. But our health is so important! Good luck x

It could be this:

ccjm.org/content/87/4/194

Their picture is quite mild - it can be a lot worse. And once it has happened in one place it is likely to be worse if it happens in the same place again.

Thisis a bit more dramatic:

You do need it investigated though to be sure that that is what it is - then you don;t have to worry as much when it happens again

Oh darn - wasn't meant to be, the image I found in the second I meant to use was quite dramatic. And of course, I can't find it now!!!!!!

I’ve had this as it appears in your link PMRpro. It easily appears after doing something with my fingers or hand thatApplies pressure. Pruning, scissors, inadvertent knocking them. Cooking. Sometimes I can’t figure it out, especially when it involves partial palm. Bruising easily with lupus just happens is what I thought.

For the original poster yes plz get that checked and plz come back and tell us

What Dr says?

Note I do not have lupus but Stills RA. I get afternoon temperatures. I get smaller episodes similar to your picture but only from banging the hand not overuse. I apply ice which helps the pain and swelling. Let’s us know how you get on please.
