Plaquenil and possible drug interaction to antibiotics

Hi! Last week I knew something else was off, but it wasn't until Friday, that I knew it was a UTI. Excruciating pain, fever, constant painful trips to the bathroom, etc. and a strip from Amazon showing leucocytes, protein and blood. So Sat. morning went to Express Care. 3 hours later (not so express), I was on the way to the pharmacy to get Leviquin which I had never taken. At the pharmacy, the pharmacist came out to talk to me to say it can interact with Plaquenil and cause arrythmia which I already take meds for A Fib and PVCS. She said she would call the doctor from the express care to get something else. So I returned home to wait. In the end she reached my GP and he changed the prescription. I am so fortunate that the pharmacist was conscientious and doing her job well. Another 3 hours later,Ii was able to take the first pill. I have taken Plaquenil and the generic for 25 years and luckily whenever had to take an antibiotic, I had never been prescribed one that interacted until now. Again, I am just so grateful to this pharmacist.

Healing hugs to all.

I do not tolerate levaquin very well. As a matter of fact, I do recall taking it with Plaquenil and I got frequent palpitations. It is now listed on my allergy list. The 2 drugs together prolong something called QtC which is the interval when your heart recharges to pump. Sometimes your heart beats before it’s completely recharged which can lead to skipped beats and arrhythmias. I do okay with ciprofloxacin which is strange.

Glad your pharmacist got you squared away. ❤️xx

Thanks for your response. Since my arrythmia worsened after Covid and the meds were adjusted 3 times. It could have been dangerous. I will add it to my list of meds I can't take.

Healing hugs.
