Hi, my 10 year old daughter has just been diagnosed with Lupus. I have extensively researched online about which vitamins and probiotics to get her but there is just too much out there and I can’t make sense of what are the best ones for me to get. Please can anyone help me?

I like natural diet vs supplements when possible. Prebiotic foods include high fiber foods, garlic, most fruits and veggies, oats, nuts. Really any insoluble fiber acts as a prebiotic. Yogurt is a great probiotic as are fermented drinks and sauerkraut. As to vitamins ask her pediatrician if they recommends supplements. Due to sun sensitivity vitamin D is often supplemented. I am sorry your little one has been dealt this hand. It must be very hard to watch her suffer. You are in my thoughts.

it's very tricky supplementing with probiotics and vitamins for lupus as you never really know if you would make the condition worse. Having an autoimmune disorder often means that what is usually good for most people, could make people with lupus worse. Example, most people benefit from a strong immune system, but lupus patients benefit from suppressing the immune system. Probiotics are live bacteria and there has been some research showing lupus patients have different type, or less diverse type of bacteria, but the cause and effect hasn't been established, and some of the gut bacteria has been proven to worsen lupus. Unless your daughter has a vitamin deficiency, I woudn't give her anything except a balanced food. Often lupus patients are los on Vit D, so you could check if that's the case with your daughter. I do not know of any vitamin or probiotic that has therapeutic effect on lupus. and there are risks too. For example I have gastro issues and my gastroenterologist says i have SIBO, and definetly shoudl not take any probiotics, but follow FODMAP diet. Everyone is different so please be careful when doing experiments on your daughter.

I can only speak from my own experience and say I've found fish oils, Vit D3 and B vitamins to be a must have. Iron and magnesium are often useful. You could get a vitamin profile to see if there are any deficiencies. I use inulin as a prebiotic (it's a sugar, so you can add to food and drinks). Anything I take has to be as free from additives as possible for me, so I tend to use pure encapsulations though they are expensive.

Diet wise avoiding processed food can help. Lots of fresh fruit and veg, bone broth. Going gluten free have been found to help many. There are more extreme diets like the autoimmune protocol, but kids might find that difficult.

I'm so sorry about your daughter. I hope she is getting the medical support she needs xx

So sorry to hear about your daughter but fantastic that you are on this forum as it will provide you with kindness and support (alongside plenty of knowledgeable people )My only word of caution would be with garlic … it causes my skin to rash and swell . I have heard of other people having this intolerance too .

You obviously have to do what you feel is right but please be very cautious of “nutritional therapists” that want to charge you hundreds of pounds for consultations . I’m only saying this as I have a number of friends who’s children have autoimmune conditions and you really can end up spending a fortune for little results . Anyone worth there salt won’t ask £300.00 …

I hope that doesn’t sound negative and I’m sure you’ll get some amazing advice from your post .

Take care x 🌸

Have you looked at the Lupus UK website. There are several useful publications free to download. We also have set up a new group for parents and children to meet virtually with an expert clinician. Best wishes Kevin

Thank you so much, the support on here is fantastic and I really appreciate it x

It would be a good idea for you to join lupus U.K. as they have marvellous resources and nurses at the end of the phone to help and advise you. Please don’t give a child.or yourself, any supplements until you’ve been blood tested and know for sure you are deficient as there can be toxicity issues with certain ones.

The gp or nurses should be able to advise you on appropriate dietary ideas to help keep you both well as you will also be under horrendous stress right now and you both need to stay hydrated and well nourished to cope with this.best of luck to you both and big hug for you both x
